At this happy time our royal firmaun, indifpenfa

bly requiring obedience, is issued, that the Chuck-
lahs of Bundwan, Midnipore, and Chittigong, etc.
and alfo the twenty-four pergunnahs of Calcutta etc.
(the zemindary of the high and mighty, the noblest
of exalted nobles, the chief of illuftrious warriors,
our faithful fervants and fincere well-wishers, wor-
thy of our royal favours, the English Company) which
were granted to the faid Company in the time of
Meer Mahomed Coffim and Meer Mahomed Jaffier -

Khawn, deceased. We, in confideration of the at- 1765 tachment of the faid Company, have been graciously pleased to confirm to them, from the beginning of the Fufful Rubby of the Bengal year 1172 as a free gift and ultumagau, without the affociation of any other person. It is requifite that our royal defcendants, the Viziers, the bestowers of dignity, the Omrahs, high in rank, the great officiers, the Mutfeddees of the Dewannee, the managers of the business of the Sultanut, the Jagueerdars and Crooriers, as well the future as the prefent, ufing their conftant endeavours for the establishment of this our royal command, leave the faid diftricts and pergunnahs in poffeffion of the faid Company from generation to generation, for ever and ever; looking upon them to be infured from dismiffion or removal, they muft on no account whatsoever give them any interruption, and they must regard them as excufed and exempted from the payment of all manner of customs and demands. Knowing our orders on this fubject to be moft ftrict and pofitive, let them not deviate therefrom. Written the 24th of Sophar, of the 6th Year of the Jaloos. (12. Août 1765.)

Contents to the paper which has received our Gign-manual, our royal commands are iffued, that' the Chucklahs of Bundwan, Midnipore, and Chittigong, etc. and alfo the twenty four pergunnahs of Calcutta, etc. (the zemindary of the English Company) which were granted to the faid Company in the time of Meer Mahomed Coffim, and Meer Mahomed Jaffier Khawn, deceased, be confirmed to the faid Company, as a free gift and ultumgau, without the allociation of any other perfon.

tioned term, and after him the Company aforesaid,
as unconditional Jagueerdars, and regularly pay them
the revenues of the faid Pergunnahs.

Whereas a funnud has been prefented to us under

the feal of the Nabob, Najim al Dowlah Bahader,
to the following purport, viz. "The fum of 222,958
,,ficca rupees and odd, agreeably to the Dewannee
,,funnud and the funnud of the high and mighty
,,Sujah al Muluck Hoffam ô Dowlah MEER MOHA-
MED JAFFIER KHAWN BAHADER, has been appoin-
,,ted from the Pergunnahs of Calcutta, etc. in the
,,Sircar of Sautgaum etc. in the province of Bengal
,,(the Paradife of the earth) the zemindary of the
,,English Company, as an unconditional jagueer to
,,the High and Mighty Zubdut al Muluck Nuffer al
Dowlah LORD CLIVE, Bahader, now likewise the
,,faid Pergunnahs are confirmed as an unconditional
,,jagueer to the High and Mighty aforefaid, from
,,the 16th May of the 1764th year of the Christian
Atile (anfwering to the 14th of Zelcada of the
1177th year of the Hegira) to the expiration of
10 years, they fhall appertain as an unconditional
jagueer to the High and Mighty aforefaid, and
,,after the expiration of this term, to revert to the
,,Company as an unconditional jagneer and perpetual
,,gift; and if the High and Mighty aforefaid fhould
,,die within the faid term, they fhall revert to the
,,Company immediately upon his death." And whe-
reas the faid funnud has met with our approbation
at this happy time, therefore our royal firmaun, in-
difpenfably requiring obedience, is iffued; that in
confideration of the fidelity of the English Company
and the High and Mighty aforefaid, the faid jagueer
stand confirmed agreeably to the aforefaid sunnud:
it is requifite that the prefent and future Mutfeddees
the Chowdries, Canongoes, Muckaudums, Ryots,
and all other inhabitants of the Pergunnahs of Cal-
