The manual wind chests are all on the same level, 12 feet. The solo is back of the Great and may be regarded as the enclosed part of the Great organ. The pedal organ is back of the swell and choir but on a lower level, 6 feet. The organ is unusually roomy inside. The tuner need not be an acrobat. The stop jambs follow the receding line of the manuals from choir to solo and are also at an angle of 45° to the front of the keyboards. The stop and coupler handles move 1 inch. They are of the type known as mushroom handle, 111⁄2 inches in diameter with ivory faces the size of a half-dollar. The lettering is Norman script. The stops are arranged in horizontal rows of 4 knobs each and the couplers are in two vertical rows between the stops and the manuals. The jambs and choir keyboard form three sides of a hexagon which brings the player remarkably close to his instrument. The pedal sharps are 11 inches back of the front of the choir white keys. The pedal naturals 32 inches from Great. The pedal is concave radiating on an 8 feet 6 inches radius. The pedal movements, reversibles, etc., are arranged in two symmetrical groups of 7 levers each. The vox pedal is on the left, crescendo on the right. The choir, swell and solo pedals are in the middle. From the player's point of view this is the cosiest, most comfortable organ imaginable, but must be tried to be really appreciated. Regarding the voicing of this wonderful instrument, which was accomplished by Mr. H. A. Burke, it may be safe to say nothing finer may be found anywhere. The tonal scheme as carried out in this instrument must be heard to be understood. The pneumatic action is as responsive as a grand piano. Each row of pipes stands on its own separate wind chest and has its own separate valves.

and dexterity of his writing, and there is no evidence of hurried work. Also he has the power of harmonically increasing the interest of his themes to an unusual degree. The Te Deum will be in demand for festival occasions. The setting of the Benedictus is rather too elaborate for use in the American Church, but its fine accompaniment will command attention. The evening canticles are in the key of G, and the Magnificat is especially bold in conception, some splendid choral effects being obtained by entirely new means. That Mr. Macpherson has studied Palestrina to good purpose is proved by the truly beautiful manner in which he has written the conclusion of the Gloria Patri.

Mr. J. A. Symonds' beautiful Christmas verses are adequately set to music by the organist of St. Alban's, London. It is somewhat elaborate, and contains a solo for contralto with a picturesque accompaniment. The chorus parts are pastoral

in character, and decidedly interesting. MAGNIFICAT AND NUNC DIMITTIS. H. Elliot Button. London: Novello & Co., Ltd. New York: The H. W. Gray Co.

This setting contains a great deal of unison work and is easy, unpretentious, yet interesting withal. It will be of great service to amateur choirs.

These are respectively Nos. 436 to 439 of "The Orpheus," a series devoted to music for male voices. These beautiful old melodies are arranged for four male voices with an artistic touch and clever perception of the requirements of a male chorus that will win admirers wherever they are sung. Where all are so good it is almost unnecessary to select one for special mention, but the setting of "Annie Laurie" will commend itself to every one for its deftness and smooth writing. The same four numbers are also newly arranged by Mr. Button for four-part mixed chorus in Novello's Part Song Book, Nos. 1037 to 1040. NOW THE GOLDEN MORN. John E. West. THE COUNSEL. effect in place of the customary Mendelssohn march. Mr. Jepson's contributions to organ literature are welcome. There is real strength and earnestness in much of his work, and notwithstanding some unconventional and occasionally bizarre passages he has produced a set of pieces which are of undoubted musical interest. SHORT COMMUNION SERVICE. Chas. E. Allum. New York: G. Schirmer.

This is a capital little setting, with monotoned Creed. Both the Sanctus and Agnus Dei have solo parts (tenor and bass) which are effective, and the Gloria in Excelsis is provided with suitable chants. Mr. Allum has followed the usual, but undesirable, way of changing the chant at the words "O Lord God, heavenly King." The prayer book plainly indicates that the change should take place at the succeeding sentence.
