Reviews of New Music.

THE MORNING AND EVENING SERVICE, with the OFFICE OF THE HOLY COMMUNION. Henry Hadley. New York: The H. W. Gray Co.; Novello & Co., London. Mr. Hadley's music is of the modern kind, full of ingenuity, and possessing an uncommon interest. He follows the text with fidelity, and no detail escapes due expression in the music. The Te Deum is a fine piece of work, laid out with great care. We are sorry to see, however, the passage "Also the Holy Ghost" marked pianissimo. Students of theology point out that the words indicate "Strengthener," as well as "Comforter." The Benedictus is somewhat lengthy for use in the American Church, but there is a very compact and satisfactory setting of the Jubilate which can be used in its place. The office of the Holy Communion is written with much spirit and musicianly conscientiousness. It is concise in every particular-the Incarnatus perhaps being too brief-and it is eminently fitted for general use. The Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis is written in the Cathedral style, but without "verse" parts. The work forms Nos. 98 to 102 of The Church Music Review Supplements.

THE OFFICE FOR THE HOLY COMMUN-
ION. Herbert W. Wareing.

New York: The H. W. Gray Co.; Novello &
Co., London.

Dr. Wareing has won for himself an enviable position as a writer of Church Music, his anthems, especially "Come now, and let us reason," being sung by every well-regulated choir. This service, which forms Nos. 94 to 97 of The Church Music Review Supplement, is an admirable one for parish choir use where a Choral Eucharist is maintained. It is dignified-and by this term we do not mean to imply that it is "dry"-well laid out for the voices, and thoroughly "singable." The solo passages are very brief, and may be attempted by choristers of moderate pretensions, while the choral work will give pleasure to both singers and listeners. The service should find a place in every choir library.

VAN BROEKHOVEN'S EXERCISES.

New York: The H. W. Gray Co.; Novello &
Co., London.

Mr. Van Broekhoven's book on "The True Method of Tone Production" is undoubtedly the most satisfactory and philosophical treatise on voice production of the present time, and these books of exercises are intended as supplements to it. They commence with elementary exercises for soprano or tenor, alto, and bass or baritone, and a second or advanced series is arranged for the same voices. A complete system of tone placing is given, and all the vowels, not only Italian, but French and English, are arranged with almost every possible combination of consonant. These again are adapted to all the registers of the voice. It is not too much to say that a conscientious study of Mr. Van Broekhoven's book, concurrently with these admirably arranged exercises, will give the student a complete vocal equipment.

ON HIMALAY. Granville Bantock.

London: Novello & Co.; The H. W. Gray Co.,
New York.

This short setting of Shelley's exquisite poem is a veritable little gem. It is for four-part singing, with a coda in eight parts. Whether sung by eight voices or a full chorus, the work cannot fail to produce a great effect.

FANTASIA IN C. William Byrd.

London: Novello & Co.; The H. W. Gray Co.,
New York.

This is a reprint from the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book of the celebrated Fantasia. The work was analyzed in the "Musical Times" a year or two ago, and a great deal of admiration was expressed for the composition. Much of it is in canon form, and the composer's skill in imitation is shown on every page there are brilliant passages, too, of great effect, and any one who plays it well may lay claim to the title of good executant. With skilful registration the piece would produce a fine effect.

TO ZANTE. Joseph Holbrooke.

London: Novello & Co.; The H. W. Gray Co.,
New York.

The composer names this a dramatic choral song. Eight parts are employed, two sopranos, altos, tenors and basses, and to give an adequate rendering of the work every singer, of the four upper parts at least, must be an artist. Mr. Holbrooke's setting is worthy of Poe's beautiful poem. Vocal parts and accompaniment alike are dramatic in character, and they have a certain picturesqueness which is indubitably attractive.

O GOD, WHOSE NATURE.
NOT UNTO US, O LORD.

T. S. Dupuis.

O GIVE THANKS UNTO THE LORD. Matthew Lock.

London: Novello & Co.; The H. W. Gray Co.,
New York.

Dr. Dupuis is chiefly known in this country by his fine double chants. Mr. J. E. West has edited the above two anthems and adapted them to modern requirements. "O God, whose Nature," is a five-part (two tenors) "full" anthem of the cathedral type, with the usual contrapuntal treatment. "Not unto us" is a short, four-part composition, replete with cleverness of vocal effect. The anthem by the composer of the "Macbeth" music is a "verse" anthem for alto, tenor and bass, without chorus. It is written in Locke's beautifully flowing and vocal style, and is well calculated to exhibit the capabilities of the three parts employed.
