The vessels of all classes built in the United States during the past four years, apportioned in respect to the several grand divisions of the country, are shown, with their tonnage, in the table below: This shows that 41 per cent. of the tonnage of the country during the past year was built on the Atlantic sea-board, 8 per cent. on the Pacific coast, 46 per cent. on the Northern lakes, and 5 per cent. on the Western rivers. During the past year the iron and steel vessels built in the United States amounted to 53,513 tons. The following table shows the tonnage of iron vessels built since 1869: The number of iron vessels built at the lake ports during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1889, was 14, the tonnage being 29,415, and the number of iron vessels documented at that date on the lakes was 70, the tonnage being 96,774. The increase in the tonnage built upon the lakes during the past year as compared with that of the previous year was 5,977. The number of vessels documented in the various customs districts on the Northern lakes at the end of the fiscal year was 3,412, and the tonnage was 972,271. Of this number, 1,285 vessels of 325,083 tons were sailing craft; 1,455 vessels of 575,307 tons were steamers, and the residue, consisting of 672 vessels reported, of 71,881 tons, were canal-boats, barges, etc. The totals of the entire tonnage of the United States are as follows: WESTERN RIVERS.
