Mr. Whiton moved to strike out all after the word “resolved,” and insert "that the Rev. Washington Philo and the Rev. E. Slingerland be each requested to hold divine service in the hall of the House of Representatives on each alternate Sabbath."

Mr. Parkison moved that the resolution and the amendment be laid on the table;

Which was agreed to.

On motion of Mr. Ray, the House adjourned.

Thursday, December 10, 1840.

The Journal of yesterday was read and corrected. The speaker announced the appointment of the following stand. ing committees:

On the Judiciary-Messrs. Dunn, Whiton, Dewey, Barber and Deming.

On Sohools-Messrs. Brunson, Mills, Bond, Gray and Parmelee. On Internal Improvements-Messrs. Dewey, Brunson, Rockwell, Bruce and Hackett.

On the Militia-Messrs. Batchelder, Parkison, Brazelton, Giddings and Mills.

On Finance-Messrs. Long, Ogden, Bruce, Shepard and Parmelee.

On Corporations-Messrs. Whiton, Batchelder, Dunn, Suther land and Darling.

On Claims-Messrs. Parkison, Batchelder, Darling, Parmelee and Brazelton.

On Enrolled Bills-Messrs. Rockwell, Giddings, Hackett, Bond and Burt.

On Expenses-Messrs. Darling, Ogden, Brazelton, Bruce and Burt.

On Agriculture and Manufactures-Messrs. Deming, Gray, Bond, Whiton and Sutherland.

On Engrossed Bills-Messrs. Ray, Dewey, Brunson, Dunn and Long.

On Roads-Messrs. Shepard, Hackett, Ogden, Barber and Deming.

On Territorial Affairs-Messrs. Barber, Parkison, Ray, Long and Sutherland.

Mr. Parkison offered the following resolutions, which were adopted:

Resolved, That the committee on the finances of the 'Territory be instructed to ascertain and report to the House the whole amount of appropriations which have been made by the Legislative Assembly since the organization of the Territory, discriminating between the amounts of appropriation at each session, and also the amount of the pay and mileage paid to the members of the Legislative Assembly at each session.

Resolved, That the committee on the finances of the Territory be instructed to report, so far as any information they can obtain will enable them to, what appropriations which have heretofore been made by the Legislative Assembly, remain unpaid.

The Speaker laid before the House the annual report of the Milwaukee and Rock River Canal Company for the year 1840. [See Appendix, document A.]

On motion of Mr. Ray,

The reading of the report was dispensed with, and 500 copies thereof ordered to be printed.

Mr. Dunn gave notice of his intention on a future day to ask leave to introduce several bills, to be entitled as follows:

"A bill to amend an act entitled an act concerning the proceedings of courts of record, and to repeal certain portions of said act;" "A bill to amend an act concerning judgments and executions, and to repeal certain portions of said act;"

"A bill to amend an act entitled an act concerning testimony and depositions, and to repeal certain portions of said act;"

"A bill cor.cerning estrays, and to repeal an act entitled an act relating to estrays;"

"A bill to provide for the punishment of firing prairies;"

"A bill to amend an act entitled an act concerning the action of ejectment."

Mr. Barber gave notice that on a future day he should propose to amend the 42d rule of this House.

Mr. Giddings presented the affidavit of William H. Bruce, concerning his right to a seat in this House, which was read and laid on the table for the present.

Mr. Brunson, agreeably to previous notice, introduced bill No. 1, entitled "a bill to amend the several acts concerning Justices of the Peace;"

Which was read by its title, and referred to the committee on the judiciary.

Mr. Darling gave notice that on some future day he should ask leave to introduce a bill, entitled

"A till to permit the county officers of the county of Fond du Lac to hold their offices at any place within the township of Fond du Lac."

On motion of Mr. Dunn,

The resolution relating to the contested election of William H. Bruce, was called up for consideration.

Mr. Whiton moved to amend the resolution, as modified, by inserting after the word "Ellis," the words "together with the affi. davit of William H. Bruce;

Which was agreed to.

On motion of Mr. Parkison,

The blank in the resolution was filled with the words "as soon as practicable."

On motion of Mr. Dunn,

The resolution was further amended by adding thereto the words "to this House."

The question was then taken on the passage of the resolution, and decided in the affirmative.

On motion of Mr. Whiton,

Ordered, That the Governor's message be committed to the committee of the whole House now.

The House then resolved itself into committee of the whole on the said message, Mr. Whiton in the chair.

After a short time spent therein, the committee rose, reported the progress made, and asked leave to sit again on to-morrow. Leave was granted.

Mr. Burt gave notice that on a future day he should ask leave to introduce a bill to change the present system of county government, and to adopt a system of township organization.

Mr. Burt called up the resolution concerning the election of Chaplains.

And the question was taken on agreeing to the following amendment moved by Mr. Whiton, viz :

Strike out all after the word "resolved," and insert "that the Rev. Washington Philo, and the Rev. E. Slingerland be each requested to hold divine service in the hall of the House of Repre sentatives on each alternate Sabbath;"

And was decided in the negative.

The question then recurred on the passage of the resolution,
And was decided in the affirmative.

Ordered, That the Council be requested to concur in the said resolution.

And then the House adjourned.

Friday, December 11, 1840.

Mr. Brunson offered the following resolution :

Resolved, That the Librarian be and hereby is instructed to furnish each member of this House, who has not been previously supplied, with a map and the several statutes of this Territory, and of the American Almanac.

The question being on the passage of the resolution,

Mr. Whiton moved to amend the same by striking out the word "American;"

Which was decided in the negative.

The question then recurred on the passage of the resolution ; And the ayes and noes being called for by Mr. Whiton, were taken and were as follows:

Ayes-Messrs. Barber, Bruce, Brunson, Burt, Deming, Gray, Shepard and Newland, speaker-8.

Noes-Messrs. Batchelder, Bond, Darling, Dewey, Dunn, Gid. dings, Hackett, Long, Mills, Ogden, Parkison, Parmelee, Ray, Rockwell, Sutherland and Whiton-16.

So the said resolution was lost.

Mr, Brunson, by leave, introduced resolution No. 1, entitled
