Circulation of Collections of Apparatus and Objects for Instruction of

Science Classes.

With a view to the more efficient instruction of Science schools, suitable collections of apparatus have been formed specially adapted for the illustration of Science teaching. These collections are exhibited in the Victoria and Albert Museum, South Kensington, and are illustrative of the following Science subjects:

[blocks in formation]

Duplicate sets of the above apparatus are lent, as far as available, to Science schools for short periods. The loan is made in order that teachers may have an opportunity of examining and trying the apparatus, and be enabled to make a selection for purchase of that apparatus which would be most useful for instruction.

The following are the conditions on which loans will be granted :

--

1. Application must be made on Form 802 on or before the 1st October of each year. Full information as to the nature of the buildings in which the apparatus will be deposited, and as to the provision which will be made for its safe custody and protection must be furnished. The Managers will be held responsible for the security and safe return of the objects lent.

2. No set of apparatus will be allowed to remain on loan in any Science school for a longer period than three weeks.

3. Teachers will be allowed to use the apparatus for the purpose of demonstrating before their classes; but it must not be used by the students. Any damage which the apparatus may sustain whilst in the possession of the class will have to be made good at the expense of the Managers.

4. Upon the receipt of the apparatus from the Board the Secretary of the Managers must immediately report to the Board the condition in which it is received, and specially notify any damage or injury. The Managers will be held responsible for the apparatus being safely repacked, and will be accountable for any damage which the collection may receive from the time of its receipt by them until its return to the Board.

Note. The cost of carriage of the collection to and fro will be defrayed by the Board.

Drawing in Light and Shade from a cast.

A Second Class obtained at the examinations in two of the foregoing subjects counts for the grant of the Elementary Drawing Certificate (see page75). Drawing with chalk upon the Blackboard.

All Students must be presented for an examination each year in Drawing with chalk upon the Blackboard.

A Pass in Blackboard Drawing based on the examination of the Student in both years will count for the Elementary Drawing Certificate and for the Training College Drawing Certificate (see below as to this certificate). Geometrical Drawing. Perspective.

A Second Class success in Geometrical Drawing (Art) and Perspective Drawing will count for both the Elementary Drawing Certificate and the Training College Drawing Certificate (see below as to this certificate).

There are two courses of instruction in Drawing, each of which is intended to cover two years' study in Drawing at the Training College. A Training College may not take the two courses concurrently, except during the adoption of an alternative course. One course is for the Elementary Drawing Certificate (see p. 75) towards which students may have already obtained successes which can be counted, and are counted, for this certificate. The second course is an alternative course for the Training College Drawing Certificate for the grant of which success is necessary in

(b) Blackboard Drawing; and

(c) Geometrical and Perspective Drawing.

ART.

The drawings under (a) above should be well finished
drawings, done in the Training College by its
students with either pen, pencil, chalk, or brush
(with tints of the same colour, i.e., monochrome) in
outline, or shaded, from common objects, casts of
ornament, or flat examples. The drawings must
be forwarded to the Board of Education, South
Kensington, London, S.W., on the 1st April, in
accordance with the regulations (see Form 564 T.Ć.).
When colour work is submitted, it will be examined
according to the standard for painting from still
life, from casts and common objects, and for design
in colour.

Each set of works from a student will be marked
either Good, Fair (which will count towards the
Training College Drawing Certificate), or Fail.

The examinations are based on the syllabuses (see Note II. on p. 63). The Examination papers for Science subjects are set in the Elementary and Advanced Stages papers. and in Honours, except in the case of Subject XV. (General Biology) and of the Day Examinations in which no papers in Honours are set. Questions are also set on the method of teaching the various Science subjects concerned; and the answering of one or more of these questions may be compulsory.

Training College students may sit either at the Day Examinations or at the Evening Examinations, but not at both, and all the students of each college must take the same series of examinations in Science or Art, except that students taking Honours Examinations in Science must sit for these at the Evening Examinations, even though the College generally be taking the Day Examinations in Science.

No student in a Training College may attend an examination in a subject Restrictions of science other than that provided for his own College; and students of Day Training Colleges who receive instruction in Art at an Art Class or School of Art outside the College are considered as students of such class or school, and grants in respect of their instruction will not be made under the rules laid down for Training Colleges.

Application for the examination must be made to the Board on Forms Application 119 (T.C.) and 276, not later than the 20th March.

The dates and times at which the examinations are held are given in the time table (see pp. 81 and 86).
