f. Grants are not made for instruction in subjects of Science which are inappropriate to the students in the locality. A certificate will in all cases be required from the Managers of the class in which Subject XVIII., XX., XXI., or XXIV. is taught, that the students are, or are going to be, employed in a trade or industry to which the subject applies, or are going to be teachers of the subject.

g. No payment will be made for the practical work of a student in any subject unless he has received or is receiving such theoretical instruction in the same or a higher stage of that subject as to render him eligible for a grant in respect of the theoretical instruction.

h. An attendance grant will not be made to the Managers of a School on account of a student's instruction in Day Classes in Stages 1 and 2 of Mathematics, unless such student earns an attendance grant at the school in at least one other subject of Science during the same

session.

i. In an endowed school claiming attendance grants for Stages 1 and 2 of Mathematics, the claim will be subject to reductions according to the following scale:

Endowments amounting to 21. per head and under in the endowed school, no deduction. Endowments amounting from 21. to 31. per head, a deduction of 5s. for each student earning the attendance grant.

Endowments amounting from 31. to 41. per head, a deduction of 10s. for each student earning the attendance grant.

Endowments amounting from 41. to 5l. per head, a deduction of 15s. for each student earning the attendance grant.

Endowments amounting from 5l. to 6l. per head, a deduction of 20s. for each student earning the attendance grant.

Endowments amounting to 61. or over per head, a deduction of 25s. for each student earning the attendance grant.

A certified copy of the latest published Statement of Accounts of the endowed school should be sent up not later than the 30th

j. Pupils who are, or have been, students of Institutions receiving State Aid, such as the Queen's Colleges in Ireland, the Royal College of Science, London, the Royal College of Science, Dublin, and the Royal Dockyard Schools, will not be eligible for grants in those branches of Science which are taught in those institutions.

In the case of instruction given at University Colleges in Great Britain which receive grants from the State under the Treasury Minute of 2nd June 1897, payments are only made on account of the students of special evening classes. A certificate will be required from the college authorities that no student on account of whom a grant is claimed is, or has been, a student of the day classes of the college in the subject or subjects in respect of which the claim is made.

k. No grant for attendance at instruction will be payable in respect of a teacher in a subject which he is recognised by the Board as qualified to teach.

The restrictions as regards Dockyard Appren-
tices are as follows:-

1. Students in the Lower School are ineligible
for registration in Stage 1 of Subject V.
2. Students in the Upper School, Lower Divi-
sion, are ineligible for registration in Stages
1 or 2 of Subject V.

3. Students in the Upper School, Higher
Division, are ineligible for registration in
Subject V (all stages).

4. Students in the Upper School are eligible
for registration for only one year in the
Elementary Stages of Subjects VI., VIII.,
IX., and X.

PAYMENTS ON RESULTS.

ART.

XLIII. The following Payments are made on the Results of Examination (see § XXXVII.).

(a.) For Honours (except in Schools of Science and Training Colleges, for which see pp.

56 and 60) where the subject is divided into parts, for passing the qualifying examination in Part I. 4. and for a first or second class in Part II. 61. and 31. respectively. For Honours where the subject is not divided into parts the payment for a success will be 61.

(c.) If the student, on account of whom payment under (a) and (b) is claimed, has been previously successful in the same subject, or in a corresponding subject, the payment on his account will be reduced by the payment which would be claimable on such previous success; but when such previous success has been obtained in a school or class under the same Managers, and has not been paid upon, the Board may allow the full claim. Payments for not more than three successes, whether in Honours or in Drawing from Life or Modelling from Life or Architectural Design, will be allowed for the same student in the same year.

PAYMENTS FOR SCHOOL WORKS.

School Works.

XLIV. The payment for School Works is a sum Payments for not exceeding 37. per student for the works (see § XXXIII.) executed during the previous year in a Science Class in Subjects I., II., III., and IV., and in a School of Art (see § XIIIa.) or Art Class (see § XIIIb.) in all subjects during its recognised meetings.

XLV. SPECIAL PAYMENTS TO SCHOOLS OF ART.

In addition to the foregoing attendance grants and payments on results, a School of Art can claim: (a.) 31. for a Student obtaining a Free Studentship tenable at the School or Local Scholarship (see § XLIX. p. 33.) (b). 51. for every student taught in the School who obtains a Royal Exhibition or a National Scholarship, or is admitted as a Student in Training to the Royal College of Art. (See p. 39.)

(c.) A sum not exceeding 15l. for an Art Pupil-teacher in a School of Art in which, at least, 20 students have been satisfactorily taught; and a further sum not exceeding 15l. for a second Art Pupil-teacher, in schools in which there are, at least, 50 such students. Students are considered to have been taught satisfactorily when their attendance has been regular and they have given, at the inspections or examinations, evidence of their progress during the Session.

One Art Pupil Teacher may be recognised in a branch class of a School of Art provided the instruction in the branch is of an elementary and advanced character.

The grant is to assist Managers in training young,
deserving, and qualified students to become
Teachers and is not claimable in respect of
members of the Teaching Staff.

The Managers must annually notify on Form 120
their nomination of an Art Pupil-teacher for the
approval of the Board. The candidate approved by
the Board must have passed in Elementary Free-
hand, Geometry, Model, and Perspective Drawing,
or have obtained corresponding or higher quali-
fications at the Art examinations of the Board.
The Board will consider proposals to make ap-
pointments outside this rule. The Art Pupil-
teacher, who must not be required to pay fees for
instruction, must during the year of his appoint-
ment submit works for examination, or sit for
examination in subjects other than those in which
he has previously obtained success.
No person over 25 years of age may be appointed Art
Pupil-teacher; the appointment is from year to year.
In no circumstances may the same person be con-
tinued as Art Pupil-teacher for more than five years.
An Art Pupil-teachership cannot be held by a Local
Scholar. (See § XLIX (h). Art, p. 35.)

The claim to a full grant under this article must be
supported in each case by the Art Pupil-teacher's
receipt for the amount paid to him by the
Managers in respect of his services for the session
of 12 months ending July 31st.

REWARDS TO STUDENTS.

XLVI. These consist of certificates, prizes, medals, and scholarships.

CERTIFICATES.

A certificate will be issued for each candidate who obtains a success at an examination in any subject.

Certificates of attendance will be supplied to Managers of Schools who furnish a list on Form 279 of the names of students who have attended during the session at least 25 lessons of an hour each in the Elementary Stage of a Science Subject (theoretical), or in Group I. (Art), or 40 lessons in a recognised group of subjects (p. 7), or 40 lessons of less than an hour, and not less than 40 minutes in the Elementary Stage of a Science Subject (theoretical), for issue to such students.

All the attendances which are to qualify a student for a Certificate must have been made under one body of Managers and in a single session. A student whose registration in any session commences after the prescribed date can receive no certificate in respect of attendance during that session.

SCIENCE.

(a.) A student in respect of whom a grant is claimable for attendance at a course of practical instruction in an approved laboratory will receive a certificate recording such attendance if he has obtained a success in the same or a higher stage in the theory of the same subject.

(b.) A certificate for Honours in Chemistry or Metallurgy will not be issued until the candidate has been successful in the Theoretical and Practical divisions of the subject. But these successes need not necessarily be taken in the same year.

(c.) A Group Certificate will be issued to a student who, for three consecutive years has followed a continuous course of instruction (which must include practical work in at least one subject in which he undergoes an examination in
