DETAILS RELATING TO THE GALLERIES AND ESTABLISHMENTS.

The Surrender of Pictures bequeathed by Lady Hamilton.

In July 1899 H.M. Treasury informed the Trustees that a claim to the 20 pictures bequeathed to the National Gallery in 1892 by Marianna Augusta Lady Hamilton had been laid before the Treasury Solicitor. These pictures included the fine "Portrait of Lady Cockburn and her Children," by Sir Joshua Reynolds. This claim was submitted to the Solicitor to H.M. Treasury, who, in a letter dated 18th November 1899, furnished the National Gallery Board with an opinion of the Law Officers of the Crown and of Mr. Bradley Dyne, that "the claim to these pictures by the co-heiresses of Sir James Cockburn, Bart., cannot be resisted." Under these circumstances the Trustees considered that they had no alternative but to accept the opinion as conclusive, and, failing to obtain an offer from the owners, to sell to the Gallery the Portrait of Lady Cockburn, by Reynolds, they obtained the advice of the Solicitor to H.M. Treasury as to the persons to whom the pictures should be delivered; and in April 1900, as soon as a proper receipt could be prepared, the above-mentioned 20 pictures, as scheduled in the Director's Report of 1892, were delivered to the order of the following six ladies, viz. :-Miss Phelips, Mrs. Bankes, Mrs. Fortescue, Mrs. Benyon, Miss Astley, and Mrs. Hood.
