CALL FOR MEETING.

NEW ENGLAND COTTON MANUFACTURERS' ASSOCIATION,

BOSTON, October 1, 1875.

DEAR SIR:-The stated Semi-Annual Meeting of the Association will be held (by adjournment) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boylston Street, Boston, on Wednesday, October 27, at 10 o'clock, A. M.

The following amendment to the by-laws, proposed at the Annual Meeting, will be in order for adoption or rejection; viz., To amend Article II. by substituting "last" for "third" Wednesday of April and October, and adding," or such other times as the Board of Government shall deem expedient." The amended article would read as follows:

ARTICLE II. There shall be a meeting of the members of the Association, annually, on the last Wednesday of April, in Boston, or at such other time, and at such hour and place, as the Board of Government may determine. At the first meeting of the Association for organization, and thence afterward at each annual meeting, a President, two Vice-Presidents, and six Directors, shall be chosen by ballot. The President, or in his absence the senior Vice-President, shall preside at all meetings of the Association, and of the Board of Government. The officers chosen at the first meeting shall hold their offices until the next annual meeting, and until others shall be chosen in their stead. There shall also be a semi-annual meeting of the Association on the last Wednesday of October in each and every year, or at such other time, and at such place and hour, as the Board of Government may appoint. Special meetings may be called by the Board of Government whenever they may deem it expedient, or upon the written application of any ten members, made to the Secretary, provided notice is given to the members as in other meetings.

The subject under consideration at the last meeting; viz., "Cotton Fibres, and the causes of the changes produced in them by the processes of manufacture," will be again introduced, and, by invitation, Rev. E. C. Bolles, D. D., of the Essex Institute, will present results of his microscopic and other investigations of the cotton fibre, made under the auspices of the Association; illustrating his statements by an exhibition of fibres on an enlarged scale, by means of the solar microscope. The Board of Government believe that information of very material value will be elicited, and hope that the members generally will participate in the investigation and discussion.

PROCEEDINGS.

Pursuant to the foregoing notice, the stated Semi-Annual Meeting of the New England Cotton Manufacturers' Association was held at the Institute of Technology at 10 o'clock, A. M. Above one hundred members were present.

In the absence of the President, the Vice-President, Mr. A. D. LOCKWOOD, occupied the chair.

The following gentlemen, upon nomination, were elected members of the Association :

The PRESIDENT. You will see by the call of the meeting that the first business in order will be to act upon the proposed amendments to the by-laws. The following amendment to the by-laws was proposed at the annual meeting for acceptance or rejection to-day; viz., To amend Article II. by substituting "last" for "third" Wednesday of April and October, and add

The question being upon the adoption of the foregoing amendment to the by-laws, a vote was taken, and the amendment was unanimously agreed to.

The PRESIDENT. We have upon of a patent filling-motion, designed to spin filling on a ringframe in place of a mule, with a cross-wind on the bobbin. The cross-wind is the same as the cross to a mule-cop. The machine was invented by James B. Hilliard, of Fall River, Superintendent of the American Linen Mill.
