And whereas her Majesty hath this day, by virtue of the authority vested in her for that purpose, declared that the authors, inventors, designers, engravers, and makers of books, prints, and certain other works of art, first published within the dominions of France, shall have the privilege of copyright therein.

Now, therefore, her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of her Privy Council, and in virtue of the authority committed to her by the said recited act, doth order, and it is hereby ordered, that from and after the 17th day of January, 1852, in lieu of the duties of customs now payable upon books, prints, and drawings, published at any place within the dominions of France, and exported thence into the United Kingdom, there shall be payable only the duties of customs following, that is to say:

On books, viz., works originally produced in the United Kingdom, and republished at any place within the dominions of France, and exported from thence into the United Kingdom, a duty of 27. 10s. per cwt.

On works published or republished at any place within the dominions of France, and exported from thence into the United Kingdom, and not being works originally produced in the United Kingdom, a duty of 15s. per cwt.

On prints and drawings, plain or coloured, published at any place within the dominions of France, and exported thence into the United Kingdom,

An Act to amend the Law relating to International Copyright. Passed the 10th May, 1844.

WHEREAS by an Act passed in the session of parliament held in the first and second years of the reign of her present Majesty, intituled "An Act for securing to Authors in certain cases the benefit of International Copyright" (and which act is hereinafter, for the sake of perspicuity, designated as "the International Copyright Act"), her Majesty was empowered by order in council to direct that the authors of books which should after a certain time, to be specified in such order in council, be published in any foreign country, to be specified in such order in council, and their executors, administrators, and assigns, should have the sole liberty of printing and reprinting such books within the British dominions for such term as her Majesty should by such order in council direct, not exceeding the term which authors, being British subjects, were then (that is to say), at the time of passing the said act, entitled to in respect of books first published in the United Kingdom; and the said act contains divers enactments securing to authors and their representatives the copyright in the books to which any such order in council should extend: And whereas an act was passed in the session of parliament held in the fifth and sixth years of the reign of her present Majesty, intituled "An Act to amend the Law of Copyright" (and which act is hereinafter,

ATTENDU que par un acte passé pendant la session du parlement, des première et deuxième années du règne de sa Majesté actuelle, intitulé, "Acte pour Ch. 59. assurer dans de certains cas aux auteurs le bénéfice du droit international de propriété sur les œuvres de littérature ou d'art" (lequel acte est ci-après désigné, pour plus de clarté, sous le titre d'"Acte sur le droit international de propriété littéraire"), sa Majesté a été autorisée, par ordonnance du conseil a décréter que les auteurs, dont les livres seraient à une époque future (laquelle doit être spécifiée par la dite ordonnance du conseil), publiés en pays étrangers (specifiés aussi par la dite ordonnance du conseil), et leurs exécuteurs testamentataires, représentants, ou ayantscause, auraient le droit exclusif d'imprimer et de réimprimer de tels livres dans l'étendue du territoire anglais, pendant un laps de temps que sa Majesté fixerait d'après l'ordonnance du conseil, mais qui ne dépasserait pas celui dont auraient joui des auteurs, sujets anglais, à l'époque de la promulgation du dit acte, par rapport aux ouvrages publiés pour la première fois dans le Royaume Uni; et que le dit acte contient diverses clauses qui assurent aux auteurs et à leurs représentants la propriété des ouvrages auxquels s'applique la dite ordonnance du Conseil: Et attendu qu'un acte passé dans la session

for the sake of perspicuity, designated as "the Copyright Amendment Act"), repealing various acts therein mentioned relating to the copyright of printed books, and extending, defining, and securing to authors and their representatives the copyright of books. And whereas an act was passed in the session of parliament held in the third and fourth years of the reign of his late Majesty King William IV., intituled An Act to amend the laws relating to Dramatic Literary Property" (and which act is hereinafter, for the sake of perspicuity, designated as "the Dramatic Literary Property Act"), whereby the sole liberty of representing, or causing to be represented, any dramatic piece in any place of dramatic entertainment in any part of the British dominions, which should be composed and not printed or published by the author thereof or his assignee, was secured to such author or his assignee; and by the said act it was enacted, that the author of any such production which should thereafter be printed and published, or his assignee, should have the like sole liberty of representation until the end of twenty-eight years from the first publication thereof: And whereas by the said Copyright Amendment Act, the provisions of the said Dramatic Literary Property Act, and of the said Copyright Amendment Act, were made applicable to musical compositions; and it was thereby also enacted, that the sole liberty of representing or performing, or causing or permitting to be represented or performed, in any part of the British dominions, any dramatic piece or musical composition, should endure and be the property of the author thereof, and his assigns, for the term in the said Copyright Amendment Act provided for the duration of the copyright in books; and that the provisions therein enacted in respect of the property of such copyright should apply to the liberty of representing or performing any dramatic piece or musical composition: and whereas under or by virtue of the four several acts next hereinafter mentioned (that is to say), an act passed in the eighth year of the reign of his late Majesty King George II., inti8 G. 2, c. 13. tuled "An Act for the Encouragement of the Arts of designing, engraving, and etching historical and other Prints, by vesting the properties thereof in the
