FIGURE 5.-LONGITUDINAL SECTION TANDEM COMPOUND ENGINE.

The opening in the distance piece is made large enough to remove the back cover and piston of the low pressure cylinder without disturbing the alignment of the engine.

Figure 6 shows the different parts of the internal valve; the valve spindle with its grooves, and spindle guide with roller and cam lever. All these parts, as pins, bushings, rollers and cams are case-hardened so as to prevent even the slightest wear.

Figure 7 shows one of the valve bonnets with the valve gear attached to it, removed from the cylinder.

Figure 8 shows also the arrangement of the high pressure steam eccentric. The eccentric is arranged slideable on a block which is keyed to the shaft. When the load changes the governor slides the eccentric on the block, and alters the throw of the eccentric.

eccentric, separately, and Figure 9 the whole governor assembled together with these parts.

The governor shown in Figure 9 consists of two pendulums and an inertia body. As the centrifugal forces and the inertia forces act in the same sense their combination produces a governor of a very sensitive and instantaneous action. A flat circular spring counterbalances the centrifugal forces of the pendulums.

On account of the absence of any soft packing in the whole engine, all covers and bonnets being metal to metal joints, and on account of the careful construction of the cylinders in regard to expansion and distribution of metal, these engines work safely with the highest pressures and superheats.

Figures 10 and II show two different views of a 1,000 horse power tandem compound engine, installed at the Altavista Cotton Mills, Altavista, Virginia. The main shaft is arranged to receive a second tandem compound engine of the same size later on, the crank being already pressed on the shaft. At present only half
