MAJOR ZINOVI PECHKOFF

AJOR ZINOVI PECHKOFF was born in Russia, in 1884. At

MA

the outbreak of the World War he enlisted as a private in the historic French Foreign Legion. He was with the first two fighting battalions to be sent out, and September, 1914, found him in the trenches of Champagne. He was promoted to lance corporal and then corporal. In May, 1915, while leading a bayonet charge, he was severely wounded, and later, felled by an explosive bullet, his right arm was amputated. Shortly after his second enlistment he was made lieutenant, then captain, and, later, major.

In 1917 he took part in the last Russian offensive, witnessed the collapse of Russia, and was then ordered to Salonika. From there he went to Manchuria and Siberia, and for more than a year traveled from the Maritime Provinces to the Ural Mountains. In 1919 he was sent to the Caucasus as assistant to the French High Commissioner, and then to Crimea, where he saw the downfall of General Wrangel and took part in the evacuation of more than 100,000 Russians.

He was decorated at the Court of Honor in Paris with the War Cross with palms, the Military Medal of Valor, and the Cross of St. George of Russia.

Few men have had a better opportunity than he to see and comprehend what Europe faces to-day. It is because the problems which the Allied countries are confronting are so vital to the future happiness of humanity and the preservation of civilization, that Major Pechkoff has come to America to describe Europe and its problems as he comprehends them. He has a charming personality, tells a vivid story, and speaks excellent English.
