He was very closely in touch with all that pertained to the improved conditions of the operatives and in a most sensible manner which serves as an example for others, established a great many measures for their improvement and entertainment which received the most cordial co-operation from the recipients.

He married HELEN A. DREW of Plymouth who survives him with a son, FRANK C. HOLMES, assistant treasurer of the Company and Miss HELEN HOLMES. He was ever mindful of the duties that a man owes to the town in which he lives and was for many years on the school commiltee and other committees of importance in town affairs. He was the director of the Old Colony National Bank, trustee of the Pilgrim Society and a prominent member of the Church of the Pilgrims. He joined this Association on October 30, 1889.

EDWIN T. MARBLE.

EDWIN TYLER MARBLE was born in Sutton, Mass., August 18, 1827, the son of ROYAL TYLER and ANNA (CLEMENT) MARBLE and a direct descendant of SAMUEL MARBLE of Wales who settled in Andover in 1660. He died at his home in Worcester, July 3, 1910, at the close of an active and useful business life. In public affairs he had served as representative and state senator, alderman, common council, library trustee and member of the school committee, to which positions he had been elected by his fellow citizens. He became a member of this Association, September 13, 1906.

His frank and just relations with his many employees endeared him to them and they indicated their reciprocal regard by presenting him with a beautiful loving cup on his eightieth birthday. After working in several machine shops, on high grade machinery, and also tools, he established the firm. of Curtis and Marble in 1831 for the manufacture of woolen cloth finishing machinery, and this business grew until its product is sent to textile mills all over the world.

He was a director in several banks, the Board of Trade, Worcester County Agricultural Society and was at the fore in all public measures for the good of the community. Mr. MARBLE was a member of the Piedmont Congregational Church and was deacon for nearly thirty years. He left four sons and a daughter.

CHARLES K. OLIVER.

CHARLES K. OLIVER, president of the Consolidated Cotton Duck Co., Baltimore, Md., died on the morning of August 22, 1910, on board the German-American liner, Groser Kurfurst, nearing New York. Mr. OLIVER was returning to America, after an extended pleaure trip in Europe and was apparently in good health. He was fifty-six years old. He leaves a widow, one daughter and a son, SEWELL K. OLIVER, superintendent of the Columbia Mills, of Columbia, S. C. Mr. OLIVER was a member of the banking house of Mittendorf, Oliver & Co., of Baltimore, previous to his connection with the Consolidated Cotton Duck Co. In the last-named firm he was a large stockholder. He became a member of this Association September 27, 1894, and has served on important committees where his good judgment was of great service.

HAVEN C. PERHAM.

HAVEN C. PERHAM died at Lowell, March 27, 1911. He was born in Tyngsboro, October 5, 1851, being the son of SARGENT PERHAM and SARAH A. (DAMON) PERHAM. After two years in the high school, he was employed by Mr. JACOB ROGERS in the hardware business, where he continued for many years and became later manager of the Kitson Machine Com

pany in the manufacture of pickers. On the consolidation of the Kitson and Lowell Machine Shops, Mr. PERHAM became the Treasurer of the new company which position he held until the time of his death. He leaves a wife and a son, ROGER HAVEN PERHAM. He became a member of this Association April 30, 1879.

WALTER H. SOMMERSBY.

WALTER H. SOMMERSBY was born at Suncook, N. H., June 18, 1857, and attended public schools in that town. He entered Pembroke Academy in 1870, remaining until 1873, after which he spent five years in the mills of Suncook.

He went to New Market as second hand of weaving in 1878. In 1881, he accepted the position as overseer of weaving at the Montaup Mills in Fall River. Left Montaup in 1883 to take a somewhat larger position at Arctic, R. I., in one of the B. B. & R. Knight's Mills, where he remained until 1885, when he took charge of the weaving at the St. Croix Mills in New Brunswick.

In April, 1888, he was married to Miss ETTA F. WEYMOUTH of Somersworth, N. H. He remained in White Rock until 1894, when he took charge of the Henderson Cotton Mills in Henderson, Kentucky.

He remained in the South but one year, going to Pontiac, R. I., in March, 1895, as superintendent of the Pontiac Mills and Bleachery of the B. B. & R. Knight Co. He remained in Pontiac until September, 1901, when he came to Lawrence as agent of the Atlantic Mills, which position he held until the time of his death, June 23, 1910.

He was one of the original trustees of the Lawrence Industrial School, serving as such until his death. He was a member of the Masons, Knights Templars, Mystic Shrine, an Odd Fellow, a member of the Textile Club, Country Club and others.

EDWARD B. TOWNSEND.

EDWARD B. TOWNSEND died at Brookline, February 7, 1910, and was born in Boston, November 20, 1848. After his graduation from the English High School he entered the employ of a mercantile house as clerk and shortly after went on one of their vessels to various foreign ports, remaining absent one year, a portion of the time being spent in Europe. In 1873 he entered the partnership which continued with various associates for the rest of his life. In January 1899, Mr. TOWNSEND became treasurer of the Warwick Mills, which position he held until the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters. He became a member of this Association April 25, 1901.

TRANSACTIONS.

In accordance with legal notice, the stated annual meeting of this Association, being the ninetieth meeting, was held at Huntington Hall, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, on Wednesday and Thursday, April 12 and 13, 1911.
