APPENDIX II

(U. S. Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service, June 1, 1948)

SPECIAL DATA ON THE NORTHWEST ATLANTIC FISHERIES

Tables appended consist of data on haddock, rosefish, cod, and halibut referring to: (a) Changes in average sizes; (b) relationship of value to size; (c) changes in fishing effort as shown by distances traveled; (d) relative importance of each bank. Tables 1 to 3 are data on yearly change in average size. Tables 1 (haddock) and 2 (rosefish)_have been determined by actual measurements of the sizes of fish landed. Table 3 represents an attempt to estimate yearly change for the cod, from data on relative pounds of each market classification (large market and scrod) landed, inasmuch as no market measurements have been made on this species. No data on halibut are available as all halibut are in one market classification and no length or weight measurements of these have been made.

Tables 4 (haddock) and 5 (cod) are data on the relationship of value to size. No data on rosefish or halibut are available as these fish are marketed as in single-size group.

Tables 6 to 10 deal with changes in fishing effort as shown by distances traveled. Distances are from Boston. These tables do not refer to any particular one of the four species. Table 6 is a grand summary of all years, all gear. Table 7 is all gear also, but is broken down by years. Tables 8, 9, and 10 are each broken down by years; table 8 giving data on all otter trawls; table 9 all data on handliners; table 10 all data on line trawls.

Tables 11 to 14 deal with relative importance of each major fishing bank for each of the four named species. Table 11 gives the landings by fishing area for haddock; table 12 for rosefish; table 13 for cod: and table 14 for halibut.

"New England fisheries" or "New England ports" refers to the ports of Boston, Gloucester, and Portland except for 1946, where it refers to these ports plus New Bedford and Cape Cod.

TABLE 1.—Average weight in pounds of all haddock caught on Georges Bank by the New England Fisheries (1931-46)

[blocks in formation]

1 From February of the year shown through January of the following year.

TABLE 2. Average weight in pounds of rosefish taken in the Gulf of Maine by the
Gloucester Fleet (1942-46)1

[blocks in formation]

1 Based on length-weight data collected during July-October 1943, for male rosefish from the Cashes
biological area.

' From March of the year shown through February of the following year.

TABLE 3. All cod landed at New England ports during the years 1931-46, by
pounds, estimated numbers, and estimated average weights

[blocks in formation]

1 Large cod are fish 10 to 25 pounds; market cod are fish 21⁄2 to 10 pounds; scrod cod are fish 11⁄2 to 21⁄2
pounds.

On the basis of estimated average weights of 13 pounds per fish for large cod; 4 pounds for market cod:
1.7 pounds for scrod cod.

England ports, and percentage differences (1930–46)

TABLE 6.-Relationship between fishing effort and distances traveled from New England ports 2 16-year period (1931-46), all gear 3

[blocks in formation]

1 In terms of total days absent from port. This time includes running time as well as fishing time. 2 In terms of average distances from Boston.

8 All gear includes only otter trawlers, line trawlers, hand liners.

4 Includes subareas XXII G to T.

Includes subareas XXII B to F.

6 Includes subareas XXI N to S.
7 Includes subareas XXI D to M.
Includes subareas XXI A to C.
