FOR THE USE OF SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES

By SAMUEL GARNER, Ph.D.

Recently Professor of Modern Languages U. S. Naval Academy

[merged small][ocr errors][merged small]

This grammar gives, in clear and concise outline, the
essential features of the language. The author combines,
in an unusual degree, an intimate knowledge of the Spanish
language and of its idioms rarely found save in a native
Spaniard, with the pedagogical devices and the insight into
the needs of American students which only an American
instructor of long experience can possess. The union of
these two features places the book in the front rank of
practical working text-books.

An especially serviceable feature of the book is the intro-
duction of numerous business letters and forms, copied from
those actually used by one of the leading Spanish firms in
this country.
Both the exercises and the Spanish reading
matter, covering, as they do, a very wide range of subjects,
embrace many features which serve as an introduction to
an acquaintance with the commercial and social life of
Spanish-speaking countries. No other grammar so thor-
oughly meets this want, and a mastery of its contents will
place the student in a position where he may readily develop
and apply his linguistic knowledge along these lines.

In view of the constantly growing importance of our
relations with our Spanish-speaking possessions and neigh-
bors, a book which will equip the student thoroughly with
an accurate and ready knowledge of the language both for
reading and conversation is an essential in all schools.
Embodying methods employed and tested in many years.
of class-room instruction, this is such a book, and its use
cannot fail to give results amply proportionate to the study
expended on it.

FOR THE USE OF HIGH SCHOOLS AND ACADEMIES

By WILLIAM C. MOREY, Ph.D.

Professor of History and Political Science, University of Rochester

Cloth, 12mo, 348 pages

Price, $1.00

In this history the rise, progress, and decay of the Roman Empire have been so treated as to emphasize the unity and continuity of the narrative: and the interrelation of the various periods is so clearly shown that the student appreciates the logical and systematic arrangement of the work.

The scope of the book covers the whole period of Roman history from the foundation of the city to the fall of the Western Empire, all relevant and important facts having been selected to the exclusion of minute and unnecessary details.

The work is admirably adapted to the special kind of study required by high school and academy courses, and avoids the two extremes which are sometimes found in textbooks, -on the one hand, a too elementary and superficial treatment of the subject, suited only for children; and on the other hand, a too elaborate and critical treatment, such as should be reserved for college classes.

The character of the illustrative material is especially worthy of close examination. This is all drawn from authentic sources, and comprises-maps showing the location of every place mentioned in the text; plans of some of the most important battles; the more noted specimens of Roman architecture; and portraits of the most distinguished men of Rome, reproduced from authentic busts and statues and including an unusually complete collection of effigies of the Roman emperors.

FOR HIGH SCHOOLS, ACADEMIES, AND NORMAL SCHOOLS, AND FOR SPECIAL STUDENTS AND GENERAL READErs.

BY FRANK MOORE COLBY, M.A.

Professor of Economics in New York University.

Half morocco, 12mo, 610 pages. Illustrated

$1.50

This General History possesses certain features and advantages which distinguishes it from all other text-books of its class. While designed primarily for use as a text-book, it presents such a conspectus of the history of the whole world as admirably adapts it for the use of special students and of general readers. The special feature which characterizes the book most is the interesting style in which it is written, the story from beginning to end being told simply and clearly, and yet in a most attractive manner. The book gives in brief compass a comprehensive outline of the history of the whole world, but a larger proportional space is given to mediaeval and modern history than in most other text-books in recognition of the relation of those later periods to the present status of the world's history. To this end also the great events of the nineteenth century are especially emphasized. Throughout the book the author has sought to point out the significance of events so that they should clearly explain later historical developments.

The

The book is well supplied with useful accessories. different historical phases and periods are shown by well designed and accurate maps, many of which are printed in colors. The illustrations are numerous and finely executed. These include portraits of the world's greatest historical characters. The chapters are followed by brief summaries for reviews. The pronunciation of difficult proper names is indicated as they occur. Dynastic gene

alogies and successions are given in convenient tables. The index is very complete and well arranged.

EASY AS WELL AS FULL AND ACCURATE

One of the chief merits of this text-book is that it is simpler than any other complete and accurate treatise on the subject now before the public. The treatment, although specially adapted for the high school course, is easily within the comprehension of pupils in the upper grade of the grammar school.

TREATMENT BY TYPE FORMS

The physical features of the earth are grouped according to their causal relations and their functions. The characteristics of each group are presented by means of a typical example which is described in unusual detail, so that the pupil has a relatively minute knowledge of the type form. INDUCTIVE GENERALIZATIONS

Only after the detailed discussion of a type form has given the pupil a clear and vivid concept of that form are explanations and general principles introduced. Generalizations developed thus inductively rest upon an adequate foundation in the mind of the pupil, and hence cannot appear to him mere formulae of words, as is too often the case.

REALISTIC EXERCISES

Throughout the book are many realistic exercises which include both field and laboratory work. In the field, the student is taught to observe those physiographic forces which may be acting, even on a small scale, in his own immediate vicinity. Appendices (with illustrations) give full instructions as to laboratory material and appliances for observation and for teaching.

SPECIAL ATTENTION TO SUBJECTS OF HUMAN INTEREST

While due prominence is given to recent developments in the study, this does not exclude any link in the chain which connects the face of the earth with man. The chapters upon life contain a fuller and more adequate treatment of the controls exerted by geographical conditions upon plants, animals, and man than has been given in any other similar book.

MAPS AND ILLUSTRATIONS

The book is profusely illustrated by more than 350 maps, diagrams, and reproductions of photographs, but illustrations have been used only where they afford real aid in the elucidation of the text.

The Natural Course in Music consists of a carefully prepared series of books and charts, reasonable in price and designed to cover the whole graded course in Primary and Grammar Schools. The plan contemplates the constant use of charts, at first independent of the books, and afterwards as a systematic preparation for the lessons to be learned from day to day in the music readers.

[merged small][ocr errors][merged small][merged small]

The Short Course in Music is embraced in two books and is designed for use in graded or ungraded schools in which a more complete course is deemed unnecessary or impracticable. In both books familiar and standard songs are made the basis of elementary music instruction. The Short Course embraces over 200 such songs-sacred, patriotic, occasional, and miscellaneous. Throughout, the teaching is constantly applied to the compositions of the best song writers. Exercises in two and three parts in simple form are included in the course. Few definitions are given, but a brief summary of the Elements of Music is included in an appendix. The books are illustrated by numerous portraits of authors and composers.
