PREFACE.

READERS of the succeeding pages, not knowing the circumstances of the case, may look upon what follows as wanting in unity of purpose and design.

It may, therefore, be proper to explain that the germ of the first portion of the work appeared in an article contributed, some months since, to a periodical published in this city, which excited considerable interest in the minds of some individuals interested in the subject, and which, in an expanded form, was afterwards republished.

For convenience sake the Westminster Assembly's Directory for the Worship of God, is now added, the Editor being persuaded, that the valuable matter which it contains is too much overlooked, and that there are many lay-members of the Church who are almost in ignorance of the existence of such a Manual.

For the concluding portion of this publication, the Editor is responsible. He has no wish to depreciate the endeavours of other labourers in the same field, but while conscious of shortcomings in the execution of what is now presented to
