CHAPTER IV.

RELIGION.

Do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with thy God. (Micah vi., 8.)

1. You live in a wonderful world. If you look above you, you may see the blue sky with the golden sun by day and the calm moon and glittering stars by night. If you look around you, you may see snow-covered mountains and wooded forests, beautiful trees and sweet flowers, herds of cattle and flocks of birds, and thousands of other objects, from man to the smallest insect. If you look beneath you, you may see the earth, on which your food grows, and also lakes, rivers and the ocean, in which are found millions upon millions of fish and other remarkable things.

2. If you look at yourself you will see one of the most wonderful of all objects in this wonderful

world. Think of what your little hand can do! See how it can throw a ball, or dig the earth, or sew a dress, or remove a piece of dirt from your eye! Think of what your eye can see without getting tired, of what your ear can hear without getting worn out! Think of what you little brain can do, how it helps you to study and to remember what you learn, and how by the power of the brain men have become as great as Moses or Shakespeare! Think, too, of what a remarkable thing your heart is, how it pumps the blood through your body to keep you alive! One of the greatest writers in the Bible said: "I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” If you think for a minute you will say the same.

3. It is quite natural that you should sometimes ask yourself: "How did this wonderful world, with all its remarkable objects, come here? Who made it and me?" The answer to such questions is: "God made you and all the world." When you know this answer you have learned the first step in religion; for religion has much to do with your thoughts about God.

4. Religion teaches you to love God for His goodness. It wants you to adore Him for His greatness. It tells you to trust Him in all ways and at all times, for He loves you. It bids you honor Him. by keeping His commandments and to live a good

and holy life, because He sees you everywhere and always. Religion also teaches you to love your neighbor, to be kind and just and true to all people. Therefore religion means the love of God and the love of goodness; and you are religious when you try to be good and to do good as. God wishes.

Cats

5. In some form or other religion is found among nearly all races of men, and has been found since the earliest times. Religion is one of the great differences between man and other animals. and dogs have no religion; but men and women have, bec use men and women try to become better, to do good to others and to love God. Of course, the lower animals do not do this; so that the more religious you are the better you will become.

6. If you love your mother and father you will show them, in some way, how dear they are to you. One child will show it in one way; another child will show it in another way. So men and women try o show their love for God in different ways and, therefore, there are different religions. As you grow older you will learn that in order to be as good as possible you must know the truth about things. You will then understand what a beautiful religion Jewish children have, and how it teaches you the highest truth.
