And the faid Ambaffadors and Plenipotentiaries having in a friendly manner invited the Ambaffador and Minister Plenipotentiary of his Moft Faithful Majesty to accede thereto in the name of his faid Majefty; the under-written Minifters Plenipotentiary, viz. Ön the part of the Most Serene and Most Potent Prince, George the Third, by the grace of God, King of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, Duke of Brunswick and Lunenbourg, Arch Treasurer and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire, the Moft Illuftrious and Moft Excellent Lord, John Duke and Earl of Bedford, Marquis of Tavistock, &c. Minifter of State to the King of Great Britain, Lieutenant General of his forces, Keeper of his Privy Seal, Knight of the Moft noble order of the Garter, and his Ambaffador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to his Moft Christian Majefty; and on the part of the Moft Serene and Moft Potent Prince, Don Jofeph the First, by the grace of God, King of Portugal and of the Algarves, the Moft Illuftrious and Moft Excellent Lord, Martin de Mello and Caftro, Knight profeffed of the Order of Chrift, of his Moft Faithful Majefty's Council, and his Ambassador and Minifter Plenipotentiary to his Moft Chriftian Majesty, in virtue of their full powers, which they have communicated to each other, and of which copies fhall be added at the end of the prefent act, have agreed upon what follows, viz. His Moft Faithful Majefty defiring most fincerely to concur in the speedy re-establishment of peace, accedes, in virtue of the prefent act, to the faid definitive treaty and separate articles, as they are above transcribed, without any reserve or exception, in the firm confidence that every thing that is promised to his faid Majesty will be, bona fide, fulfilled, declaring at the fame time, and promifing to fulfil, with equal fidelity, all the articles, claufes, and conditions, which concern him. On his fide, his Britannick Majefty accepts the prefent acceffion of his Moft Faithful Majefty, and promises likewise to fulfil, without any referve or exception, all the articles, clauses, and conditions contained in the faid definitive treaty and

feparate articles above inferted. The ratifications of the prefent treaty fhall be exchanged in the fpace of one month, to be computed from this day, or fooner if it can

be done.

In witness whereof, we, Ambaffadors and Minifters. Plenipotentiary of his Britannick Majefty, and of his Moft Faithful Majefty, have figned the prefent act, and have caufed the feals of our arms to be put thereto. Done at Paris, the 10th of February, 1763..

His Moft Faithful Majefty's full Power.

ON Jofeph, by the grace of God, King of Portu gal, and of the Algarves, on this fide of the fea, and on that fide in Africa. Lord of Guinea, and of the conqueft, navigation, commerce, of Ethiopa, Arabia, Perfia, and India, &c. I make known to those who shall fee thefe my letters patent, that defiring nothing more than to fee the flame of war which has raged fo many years in all Europe extinguifhed, and to co-operate (as) far as depends upon me) towards its being fucceeded by a juft peace, established upon folid principles and being informed, that great part of the belligerant powers entertain the fame pacifick difpofitions, I am to nominate a perfon to affift, in my name, at the affemblies and conferences to be held upon this important bufinefs, who, by his nobility, prudence, and dexterity, is worthy of my confidence: whereas thefe feveral qualities concur in Martin de Mello et Caftro, of my Council, an dmy Envoy Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Court of London; and as from the experience I have, that he has always ferved me to my fatisfaction in every thing I have charged him with, relying, that I fhall, from henceforward, have fresh caufe for the confidence I have placed in him, I nominate and conftitute him my Ambaffador and Plenipotentiary, in order that he may, as fuch, affist, in my name, at any congreffes, affemblies, or conferences, as well publick as private, in which the bufinefs of pacification may be treated: negociating and agreeing with the

Ambaffadors and Plenipotentiaries of the faid belligerant powers whatever may relate to the faid peace; and concluding what he fhall negociate between me and any belligerant Kings and Princes, under the conditions he fhall ftipulate in my Royal Name: therefore, for the above purposes, I grant him all the full powers and authority, general and fpecial, which may be neceffary; and I promife, upon the faith and word of a King, that I will acknowledge to be firm and valid, and will ratify within the time agreed upon, whatever fhall be contracted and ftipulated by my faid Ambaffador and Plenipotentiary with the aforefaid Ambaffadors and Minifters of the belligerant Kings and Princes, who fhall be furnished by them with equal powers. In witnefs whereof, I have ordered these prefents to be made out, figned by my felf, fealed with the feal of my arms thereunto affixed, and counterfigned by my Secretary and Minifter of State for foreign affairs and war. Given at the Palace of our Lady of Ajuda, the 18th day of September, of the year from the birth of our Lord Jefus Chrift, 1762.

Declaration of his Moft Faithful Majefty's Ambaffador and Minister Plenipotentiary, with regard to alternating with Great Britain and France.

HEREAS on the conclufion of the negociation of the definitive treaty, figned at Paris this 10th day of February, a difficulty arole as to the order of figning, which might have retarded the conclufion of the faid treaty. We the under-written Ambaffador and Minifter Plenipotentiary of his Moft Faithful Majefty, declare, that the alternative obferved on the part of the King of Great Britain and the Moft Chriftian King, with the Most

Faithful

Faithful King, in the act of acceffion of the Court of Portugal, was granted by their Britannick and Most Christian Majefties, folely with a view to accelerate the conclufion of the definitive treaty, and, by that means, the more fpeedily to confolidate fo important and fo falutary a work; and that this complaifance of their Britannick and Moft Chriftian Majefties fhall not be made any precedent for the future; the Court of Portugal fhall not alledge it as an example in their favour; fhall derive thereform no right, title, or pretenfion, for any cause, or under any pretence whatsoever.

In witness whereof, we, Ambassador and Minister Plenipotentiary of his Most Faithful Majefty, duly authorifed for this purpofe, have figned the prefent declaration, and have caufed the feal of our arms to be put thereto. Done at Paris, the 10th of February, 1763.

Convention for the Liquidation of the Canada Paper Money, belonging to the Subjects of Great Britain, between the King of Great Britain, and the Most Christian King, [Printed from the Copy, published by Authority.]

N order to terminate the difcuffions, which have too

I long fubfifted in regard to the liquidation of this pa

per belonging to the fubjects of Great Britain, the two Courts have named and appointed their respective Ministers Plenipotentiary, viz. his Britannick Majefty, the Sieur Henry Seymour Conway, Lieutenant General of his armies, and one of his Principal Secretaries of State; likewife authorised to the fame effect by the proprietors of the faid Canada paper; and his Moft Chriftian Majefty, the Sieur Count de Guerchy, Knight of his orders, Lieutenant General of his armies, Colonel Commandant of his regiment of foot, and his Ambaffador to his Britannick Majefty; who, after having communicated their full powers and authorisations in due form to each other, copies whereof are transcribed at the end of the present convention, have agreed to the following articles:

Article I.

Article I. His Excellency General Conway, invested with the above-mentioned full powers and authorifations, accepts for the British proprietors and holders of the Canada paper, and in their names, the reduction of the faid paper on the footing of fifty per centum for the bills of exchange, and fuch part of the certificates as are entitled to the faid payments, and of feventy-five per centum for. the ordonnances, cards, and the remaining part of the certificates; and to receive, for the fifty and twenty-five per centum of the reduced principal, reconnoiffances, or rent contracts, which fhall bear an annual interest from the first day of January, 1765, of four and one half per centum, to be fubjected to the Dixiéme from the faid first day of January, 1765, in as many reconnoiffances as it fhall fuit the holders to divide their liquidated principals into, provided that each reconnoiffance fhall not be for more than one thousand livres Tournois: which reconnoiffances fhall fhare the fame fate for their reimbursement as the other debts of the ftate, and shall not be fubjected to any reduction whatsoever. The whole conformably to the arrets of the Council iffued in France the 29th June, 2d July, 1764, 29th and 31ft December, 1765.

II. In order to afcertain the British property of this paper at the period, and, according to the meaning of the declaration annexed to the laft treaty of peace with France, each proprietor.or holder fhall be obliged to make a declaration thereof upon oath, in the form and terms which fhall be hereafter prefcribed in confequence of a farther delay, which his Moft Chriftian Majesty grants them to the 1ft of October, 1766, after the expiration of which, fuch of the faid papers as fhall not have been declared and tendered to be liquidated, shall remain excluded, null, and of no value.

III. These declarations on the part of the proprietors and holders of this paper, fhall be accompanied by an oath, to be taken before the Lord Mayor of the city of London, or fuch other magiftrate in perfon as fhall be named for that purpose, in fuch place, and at fuch times, as fhall be specified in the prefence of the Commiffaries or Deputies appointed, as well on the part of the Court
