Majesty engages, in concert with His Royal Highness, to give such orders as may effectually prevent any interruption being given to the Portuguese ships resorting to the actual Dominions of the Crown of Portugal, or to the territories which are claimed in the said Treaty of Alliance as belonging to the said Crown of Portugal to the southward of the Line, for the purposes of trading in slaves as aforesaid, during such further period as the same may be permitted to be carried on by the laws of Portugal, and under the Treaties subsisting between the two Crowns.

ART. III.

The Treaty of Alliance concluded at Rio de Janeiro on the 19th February 1810, being founded on circumstances of a temporary nature, which have happily ceased to exist, the said Treaty is hereby declared to be void in all its parts, and of no effect; without prejudice, however, to the ancient Treaties of alliance, friendship and guarantee, which have so long and so happily subsisted between the two Crowns, and which are hereby renewed by the High Contracting Parties, and acknowledged to be of full force and effect.

ART. IV.

The High Contracting Parties reserve to themselves, and engage to determine by a separate Treaty, the period at which the trade in slaves shall universally cease, and be prohibited throughout the entire Dominions of Portugal; the Prince Regent of Portugal hereby renewing His former declaration and engagement, that during the interval which is to elapse before such general and final abolition shall take effect, it shall not be lawful for the subjects of Portugal to purchase or trade in slaves upon any parts of the coast of Africa, except to the southward of the Line, as specified in the 2d Article of this Treaty; nor to engage in the same, or to permit their flag to be used, except for the purpose of supplying the transatlantic possessions belonging to the Crown of Portugal.

ART. V.

His Britannic Majesty hereby agrees to remit, from the

for publicada, da maneira mencionada no Artigo 1, a ratificação do presente Tratado) em desistir da cobrança de todos os pagamentos, que ainda restem por fazer para a completa solução do emprestimo de 600:000 libras esterlinas, contrahido em Londres por conta de Portugal no anno de 1809, em consequencia da Convenção assignada aos 21 de Abril do mesmo anno; a qual Convenção, debaixo das condições acima especificadas, se declara pelo presente Artigo nulla e de nenhum effeito.

ART. VI.

O presente Tratado será ratificado, e as ratificações trocadas no Rio de Janeiro dentro no espaço de cinco mezes, ou antes se possivel for.

ARTIGO ADDICIONAL.

Convencionou-se que no caso de algum colono Portuguez querer passar dos estabelecimentos da Coroa de Portugal na costa de Africa ao Norte do Equador com os negros, bona fide, seus domesticos para qualquer outra possessão da Coroa de Portugal, terá a liberdade de faze-lo, logo que não seja a bordo de navio armado e preparado para o trafico, e logo que venha munido dos competentes passaportes e certidões, conformes á norma que se ajustar entre os dois Governos.

ART. VI.

The present Treaty shall be ratified, and the ratifications shall be exchanged at Rio de Janeiro in the space of five months, or sooner if possible.

ADDITIONAL ARTICLE.

It is agreed, that in the event of any of the Portuguese settlers being desirous of retiring from the settlements of the Crown of Portugal on the coast of Africa to the northward of the Equator with the negroes bona fide their domestics, to some other of the possessions of the Crown of Portugal, the same shall not be deemed unlawful, provided it does not take place on board a slave-trading vessel, and provided they be furnished with proper passaports. and certificates, according to a form to be agreed on between the two Governments.

Artigos secretos.

ART. I.

Sua Alteza Real o Principe Regente de Portugal Se obriga a adoptar as medidas necessarias para realisar immediatamente o Artigo x do Tratado de París, que estipula a restituição da Guyana Franceza a Sua Magestade Christianissima; e Sua Magestade Britannica promette a Sua mediação, segundo o conteudo do referido Artigo, para obter quanto antes um amigavel arranjo da disputa existente entre Sua Alteza Real o Principe Regente de Portugal e Sua Magestade Christianissima, emquanto ás fronteiras de Suas respectivas possessões d'aquelle lado, em conformidade do que se acha disposto pelo Artigo VIII do Tratado de Utrecht.

ART. II.

Sua Alteza Real Se obriga a dar pleno e completo effeito á declaração feita no Artigo 1x do Tratado de Alliança concluido no Rio de Janeiro, aos 19 de Fevereiro de 1810, relativamente á Inquisição ou Tribunal do Santo Officio; o

Secret Articles.

ART. I.

It is hereby agreed, on the part of the Prince Regent of Portugal, that His Royal Highness will adopt the necessary measures for giving immediate effect to the 10th Article of the Treaty of Paris, which provides for the restitution of the French Guyana to His Most Christian Majesty; and His Britannic Majesty promises to employ His mediation, in conformity with the provisions of the said Article, to procure an early and friendly arrangement of the dispute subsisting between the Prince Regent of Portugal and His Most Christian Majesty on the subject of the frontier of Their respective possessions in that quarter, as regulated by the 8th Article of the Treaty of Utrecht.

ART. II.

It is hereby agreed, on the part of the Prince Regent of Portugal, to give full and complete effect to the declaration made by His Royal Highness in the 9th Article of the Treaty of Alliance concluded at Rio de Janeiro, on the 19th
