SHARP, BARTHOLOMEW, English buccaneer; in 1680 endeavored, with a large force, to swoop down on Panama and capture the gold fleet, bilt was induced by a native cacique to attempt raid on Santa Maria. The raid was successful in capturing the town and the garrison, but they found little booty. This so enraged the free- * booters that they slaughtered their prisoners. Sharp pushed on to Panama, where he was attacked by three Spanish war vessels. He captured all three, but was finally driven off. Later he was tried in London for piracy and acquitted.
