PREFACE This compilation brings together a selective collection of documents, legislation, and other material on inter-American relations. While it contains material on the origins and evolution of the inter-American system, the emphasis is on historically important documents in the post-WWII era, with increasing completeness in recent years, particularly in the sections covering U.S. legislation. The material is generally current through the end of 1988. Readers interested in keeping up to date on the legislation and treaties cited in the collection may consult two annual publications: For U.S. legislation, the reader may refer to Legislation on Foreign Relations, published yearly in 4-5 volumes by the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Compiled by the Congressional Research Service, these volumes are available for sale through the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402. The latest version, Legislation on Foreign Relations Through 1988, is Senate Print 101-5. For the status of treaties to which the United States is a party, the reader may consult Treaties in Force, compiled and published by the U.S. Department of State, and also available for sale through the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402. The latest version, Treaties in Force: A List of Treaties and Other International Agreements of the United States in Force on January 1, 1988, is Department of State Publication 9433.
