these means commercial success would not alone be made easier of accomplishment, but would be accelerated by closer social relations which largely govern the connection of buyer and seller. It is to a great extent by the cultivation of these methods and sentiments that European business men command the respect of our country and have secured the enormous trade as well as the personal standing they enjoy to-day.
American interests may count with confidence upon a continuance of the friendship and admiration our people have always entertained for them. The Argentines by temperament, by education, and by racial conditions bear a closer resemblance to the American national type than any other to be found in the world. Lofty and proud, generous and cheerful, their ideal is moral force wherever it is to be found; and they are willing to work with their full power for the success of those who em body that ideal, convinced that by so doing they do honor to their fundamental characteristics as a vigorous nation and that they are fulfilling the destiny for which they are reserved in the serious task of gaining and preserving the civilization of humanity.
"Permit me, then, gentlemen, to offer a toast to that bond between our countries which daily acquires new strength by its formation on the triple basis of our sympathies and mutual respect, on our everextending commercial and economic relations, and on the mutual and keener knowledge of our respective institutions and peoples which constitute in the end the very life of the nation.
"May I add to this toast the expression of my desire for the continued prosperity of the historic city of Boston, so greatly admired by my own country; and last, but not least, to the boundless success and development of the City Club of Boston." [Prolonged applause.]
MAJOR BEITH ENTERTAINED BY CLUB
On Friday, December 20, Major Ian Hay Beith, author of "The First Hundred Thousand," and who recently arrived in this country, was the guest of the Club at luncheon, at which about a hundred and fifty members were present. President Smith presided and introduced Major Beith to the members.
The speaker told of some of his experiences connected with the end of the war, the fact that he was serving with the American Army when hostilities ceased, and predicted that the war had greatly cemented the relations of the two great English-speaking races, and expressed the hope that these relations would continue in a far greater spirit than ever before.
The Boston City Club has reciprocal relations with the clubs listed below and members of the Boston City Club may have all the privileges of these clubs by presentation of their membership cards.
