PREFACE.

THE object of this work is to present as concisely as possible the Law of Patents, altered as it is by the Patents for Inventions Act, 1883.

All sections of the Act relating to patents are incorporated in the text, and distinguished by large type, and the New Rules made thereunder by the Board of Trade are set out in an Appendix at the end of the book.

In indicating the law on each point, the ipsissima verba of Judges have been adopted as often as possible, since such words must necessarily express the law far better than any deductions made therefrom, and the reader will thus have the authority on the subject before him.

Where cases which have been decided on similar points under the old law are equally applicable to the new Act, they are given. All descriptions of the cases themselves are printed in indentation, while the judgments are set out to the margin of the page; so that the description and judgment in each case may be seen at a glance.

It is hoped that this Digest may be of service to inventors, in showing them the various steps necessary in order to obtain a patent, and that from reference to the cases where previous patents have been invalidated, they may avoid like mistakes in their own.

6, PUMP COURT, TEMPLE.

January, 1884.

H. A. A. GRIDLEY.
