TREATY OF ALLIANCE.

HE Most Christian King and the United States of North-America; to wit: NewHampshire, Maffachusetts-bay, Rhode-Island, Connecticut, New-York, New-Jerfey, Pennfylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, NorthCarolina, South-Carolina, and Georgia, havCarolina, and ing this day concluded a treaty of Amity and Commerce, for the reciprocal advantage of their fubjects and citizens, have thought it neceffary to take into confideration the means of ftrengthening thofe engagements, and of rendering them ufeful to the fafety and tranquility of the two parties; particularly in case Great-Britain in refentment of that connection and of the good correfpondence which is the object of the faid treaty, fhould break the peace with France, either by direct hoftilities, or by hindering her commerce and navigation in a manner contrary to the rights of nations, and the peace fubfifting between the two crowns: And his Majesty and the faid United

E Roi très Chrêtien et les Etats Unis de l'Amerique Septentrionale, favoir, NewHampshire, la Baye de Maffachuffet, RhodeIfland, Connecticut, New-York, New-Jersey, Penfylvanie, Delaware, Maryland, Virginie, Caroline Séptentrionale, Caroline Meridionale, et Georgia; ayant conclu ce jourd'huy un traité d'amitié, de bonne intelligence et de commerce, pour l'avantage réciproque de leurs fujets et citoyens, ils ont cru devoir prendre en confidération, les moyens de refferrer leurs liaifons, et de les rendre utiles à la fureté et à la tranquilité des deux parties, notament dans le cas où la Grande Brétagne, en haine de ces mêmes liaisons et de la bonne corref pondance qui forment l'objet du dit traité, se porteroit à rompre la paix avec la France, foit en l'attaquant hoftilement, foit en troublant fon commerce, et fa navigation, d'une manière contraire au droit des gens et à la paix fubfiftante entre les deux couronnes: Et fa Ma

ARTICLE I.

If war fhould break out between France and Great-Britain during the continuance of tain, to be the prefent war between the United States and a common England, his Majefty and the faid United States fhall make it a common caufe and aid each other mutually with their good offices, their counfels and their forces, according to the exigence of conjunctures, as becomes good and faithful allies.

ARTICLE III.

The two contracting parties fhall each on ties to make its own part, and in the manner it may judge moft proper, make all the efforts in its power against their common enemy, in order to attain the end propofed.
