The Civil War, the War between the States, the War of the Rebellion--it matters little what one calls the unfortunate conflict between brothers and friends which so divided the Nation in 1861-65. Little need be said regarding that conflict in the way of introduction to any bibliography for few other periods of United States history have so interested the people of this Nation.

The holdings of the US Army Military History Research Collection related to the Civil War are extensive. Dr. B. F. Cooling has carefully prepared this bibliography to provide the greatest amount of information possible regarding these holdings. His major subject groupings are designed to permit ready access to materials relating to major areas of interest to users. It should be noted that this bibliography is restricted primarily to books and other published materials with only short narrative descriptions concerning Research Collection manuscript and photographic holdings included. detailed information concerning these manuscript collections can be found in Special Bibliography Number 6, "Manuscript Holdings of the Military History Research Collection," Part I; or will be published in subsequent parts of that bibliography at a later date. A bibliography of photographic materials will also be published at some time in the future.

As has been the case with all publications in this special bibliographic series, this bibliography of Civil War materials is not intended to be a definitive bibliography of all references related to that conflict or period. It is restricted to ONLY those materials physically incorporated in the holdings of the US Army Military History Research Collection, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania.
