stupendous monuments throughout India, Ceylon, Burmah, China, and Tibet. It has chiselled mountains into polished tombs, and it “wanders among the tombs to this day. “ Israel is an empty vine ; he bringeth forth fruit unto himself.” THE TOPES OF SACHI. It is a curious fact that 500 years before our era dates a large Buddhist establishment named Sachi, about twenty miles north-east of Bhopaul. During the present century the topes or tumuli of Sachi were explored by Lieut.-Col. Cunningham, who found in them remarkable bas-reliefs representing the religious ceremonies of the people, one of which is called “The casket scene in the palace.” The king and his ministers are seated before a relic-casket, over which two attendants hold an umbrella and a mace. Drumming and dancing figures are in action, the dancer having bracelets of the form found by Dr. Clarke in the tumuli north of the Caucasus, and another the round cap worn by the women of Cashmir to the present day. The head-dresses of most of the women are the chalebi, or balls of linen rags tightly compressed, over which a shawl is carefully wound. This was the traditional head-dress of Jewish women in the East, and reminds us of the kerchiefs for the head denounced by Ezekiel (ch. xiii. 18), which were, he says, “put on to hunt souls.” After all it is the Lord Himself who must yet give us fresh light or teach us how to put together all we have already from many different sources on the most interesting subject of His banished literal Israel's intimate connection with the Heathen. Has He not said He will recover His people from all the places of their exile ? Has He not said: Who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people ? Fear ye not, neither be afraid. Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord.”—Is. xliv. 7, 8. Judah in her yet obstinate rejection, Israel “sown in the earth” as “the seed of God,” to raise up the spiritual Israel from all nations, are two witnesses yet to be joined “ as one stick” in the hand of the mighty God of Jacob. Japheth was to "dwell in the tents of Shem," and God promised “to enlarge Japheth,” and the roving restless physical vigour of the one race was needful to the diffusion of the ruling mind of the other. It took the Semitic to compose the Aryan or Indo-European, and it took the Turanian also, the wandering Scythic element, to make the Aryan, and it takes that race now developed into Anglo-Saxon and American to carry back the truth of God to the lands in which they at first received it.
