THE BIBLE. A. 1. In addition to the eight books already mentioned, (Part VI, Chapter I, Paragraph 5), there are five other books of the Hagiographa, or Holy Writings. 2. The following are the names of the other five books of the Holy Writings: 3. The Book of Daniel contains the story of the life of Daniel and his companions. The purpose of the writer was to encourage the Jewish people who were passing through a period of great persecution. The language of the Book is partly Hebrew and partly Aramaic. 4. The Book of Ezra contains the story of Ezra the "Scribe." It tells of the return of the Jews from the Babylonian exile and of the building of the second Temple in Jerusalem. The language of this Book is partly Hebrew and partly Aramaic. 5. The Book of Nehemiah contains incidents in the life of Nehemiah and tells of the building of the walls around Jerusalem. 6. The first Book of Chronicles, (I. Chronicles), contains a sketch of the history of Israel. It traces the birth of Abraham from Adam and then continues by telling the story of Israel from Abraham to David. 7. The Second Book of Chronicles, (II. Chronicles), contains a sketch of the history of the Jewish people from Solomon to the destruction of the first Temple. B. 8. The three parts of the Bibie, namely, the Pentateuch, the Prophets and the Hagiographa, are often called The Scriptures or Holy Scriptures, or Scripture. 9. While not belonging to the Bible there are a number of other writings of great importance to the study of the Jewish religion. these is known as the Apocrypha. The first set of instructive books 10. The Apocrypha are written by Jewish authors in Hebrew or Greek. They deal with subjects after the manner of the Bible, yet these books were not included in Holy Scripture. The word Apocrypha means hidden or set aside. 11. The chief books of the Apocrypha are: ii. The Second Book of the Maccabees. iii. The Wisdom of Solomon. 12.
