PREFACE.

THE Revolution of France is so important, and so extraordinary an event, that it must have a great influence on the future conduct of mankind. It is therefore of great moment to show, whether or not it has changed the country in which it has taken place from worse to better, or what are likely to be its consequences.

That the revolution was in itself terrible, is well known; that nearly one generation has either prematurely fallen, or lived in misery on account of it, is certain; but then, the great question, and a great one it undoubtedly is, is whether the balance will, in the end, be advantageous or disadvantageous.

Many events are recorded in history, which produced misery at the time, and were founded on injustice; but which, in the end, turned out to be very beneficial to the people, who at the same time were sufferers, and had a right to complain.

Amongst those events may be reckoned the invasion of Britain under Julius Cæsar. Nothing could
