Subscribed and sworn to before me this sixth day of Jan uary, A. D. 1913. [SEAL.] Affidavit of Orlando Merchant. I, Orlando Merchant, of Gloucester, in the County of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, being duly sworn, do hereby depose and say that I have been connected with the fishing business in Gloucester for many years as owner and outfitter of vessels, and as a producer of mackerel and other fish, both on my own account and in connection with the concern of William H. Jordan & Company. I have been engaged in the mackerel fishery during this period, and have kept a record for a great many years of the money value of the stocks secured by the mackerel catchers, so called, owned in whole or in part by me or by William H. Jordan & Company. The list annexed hereto, giving the names of the schooners owned in whole or in part by me or William H. Jordan & Company, the amount of the gross stock, and the dates when secured, is compiled from my books of account, and is a correct statement. Alice Jordan. 1888 10.482. Grayling 1891 9.006. Marshall, of Gloucester, in the County of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, being duly sworn, do hereby depose and say that I have been connected with the fishing business in Gloucester for many years, first as clerk with M. Walen & Son, and later as one of the owners of M. Walen & Son, Inc. That during this period said concern has had engaged in the mackerel fishery two vessels, namely: the Schooner Bessie M. Derine and the Schooner Kentucky. The gross stocks of said vessels in the mackerel fishery during the years named are stated below. The said statement is taken from the books of M. Walen & Son, and is correct: Subscribed and sworn to January 3, 1913, at Gloucester, I, Solomon Jacobs, of Gloucester, in the County of Essex, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, being duly sworn on oath do depose and state as follows: I have been familiar with the mackerel fisheries for the last thirty years or more and have made many trips myself as master of the schooners Helen Miller Gould, Mollie Adams, Ethel B. Jacobs, Sarah M. Jacobs, Edward E. Webster, and the steamer Alice M. Jacobs, and have had during that time many prosperous years. The statement below is the correct stock made by me during the several years when I was master of one of the aforesaid vessels. Each year's stock was made by one vessel only while I was master of the same: (This [1887] was a short season on account of sickness.) In 1888, 1889, and 1890, no stock on account of absence on the Pacific coast. 1891 1893 $40,000 41,000 43,000 From 1893 to 1895 the average stock per year was $41,500. Witness my hand this sixth day of January, A. D. 1913. Subscribed and sworn to before me this sixth day of Jan uary, A. D. 1913. [SEAL.] |
