at the 3rd Grade Examinations, which were held before the adoption of the Advanced Stage, will be counted in lieu of success in the Advanced Stage.

(c.) The silver and bronze medals are usually awarded in the foregoing and other subjects.

(d.) The number of medals and prizes is increased or decreased according to the merit of the works sent for examination.

(e.) For further conditions see below.

Students who gain medals or prizes for works may be required to pass an examination in the subject for which the awards have been made.

CONDITIONS AS TO ART PRIZES.

1. The following are not eligible for medals or prizes in respect of successes in Art subjects :

(a.) a student who has previously received a medal or prize for a similar or a higher success, in the same or corresponding subject, except as provided in par. 4 (below). A certificate recording his success is given to a Student who is precluded by this rule from receiving an award.

(b.) a teacher whose Class or Classes are registered for attendance grant or grant on results from the Board in respect of the subject for which the award is announced;

(c.) a person who is or has been a Student in Training, or National Scholar or Royal Exhibitioner; or who is a Free Student at the Royal College of Art. A certificate recording his success is given to a Student who is precluded by this rule from receiving an award. (d.) a Student for whom a prize in the same subject is claimed by another Board of Managers.

2. In large towns the Managers may be empowered to make their own arrangements for obtaining the prizes if, when sending in the claim for them (Form No. 571D), they intimate in the special certificate thereon their desire to adopt this course. The Board will then pay to the Managers the value attaching to each prize gained, and furnish one prize label for each class of book prize (King's or National Competition) obtained by a student; and the Managers must undertake to procure books, &c., for their students to the value of each prize, as stated on p. 2 of Form No. 571D.

The Board cannot undertake to examine specially for local prizes. Where it is desired to give such prizes according to the judgment of the Board's Examiners, the local prize scheme should be so arranged as to adjust itself to their usual awards.

3. Students who obtain more than one medal of the same class in the same year, or in succeeding years, receive books, &c., instead of a second medal of the same class.

4. The awards of a Gold, Silver, or Bronze medal or a book prize may be made to a student once in the National Competition in each of the Subjects 23a, 236, 23c, 23d, 23e, 23ƒ.

5. Students who gain medals or prizes for works may be required to pass an examination in the subject for which they have been awarded.

APPLICATIONS FOR PRIZES.

Applications for prizes awarded for success at the works and personal Art Examinations must be made on Form 571-D, and a certificate given by the Managers on behalf of the School, that of the students for whom prizes are claimed :

1. Each is a registered Student in the School, and has received instruction from a qualified teacher; (a) and has made the number of attendances necessary to qualify for a grant for the session in the subject, or in the group including the subject, in which the prize is claimed; or (b) has executed the work in respect of which a prize is claimed in the School during the recognised meetings of the class between 1st April 1901 and 1st April 1902.

2. None has previously received a medal or prize for a similar or a higher success in the same or corresponding subject as that in which claim is now made, except as provided in par. 4 on the previous page.

3. NONE IS A TEACHER WHOSE CLASS OR CLASSES ARE REGISTERED FOR ATTENDANCE GRANT, OR GRANT ON RESULTS, FROM THE BOARD OF EDUCATION, SOUTH KENSINGTON, IN RESPECT OF THE

SUBJECT FOR WHICH THE AWARD IS ANNOUNCED.

4. None is, or has been, a Student in Training, National Scholar, Royal Exhibitioner, or is a Free Student at the Royal College of Art.

5. None is a Student for whom a prize in the same subject is claimed by another Board of Managers.

CONDITIONS OF LOCAL SCIENCE AND ART SCHOLARSHIPS.

a. With any number of students up to 100 on the register of the school or Conditions. group of schools there can be but two such Scholarships; above 100 and up to 150, three; above 150 and up to 200, four Scholarships, and so on.

b. The Scholarship or Scholarships must be awarded in a bona fide competition to the most successful student or students in some examination of the school. The terms of the competition and the award of the Scholarship will be left to the Managers of the school, subject to the approval of the Board.

c. The scholar must, at the time of first appointment, be under 16 years Age. of age on the 1st May in the year in which his appointment to a scholarship is made.

e. The scholar must continue to attend the approved day school regularly Conditions of while the school is open during a period of twelve months ending 31st July (in a School of Science the scholarship year will be coincident with that of the School of Science), and

f. In his first year and in each succeeding year during which he holds his Scholarship, he must be presented at the May or June examinations in one or more subjects of Science or of Art, and show by the results he obtains that he has made satisfactory progress, or, in the case of a Scholarship held in a School of Science, must satisfy the Inspector as to his progress.

Application for the Scholarship must be made on Form 280 before the Method of 5th April (or 5th October*). The examination on which it is awarded procedure. must be held, and Form 281 submitting the name of the successful competitor must be sent in, before the 1st August (or 1st January*). One moiety of the local contribution will be paid to the parent or guardian of the scholar by the Board shortly after the 1st September (or 1st February*), on the receipt of a certificate (Form 1066) from the Managers that he is making satisfactory progress. The other moiety will be paid in the same way after the 1st February (or 1st July*). The Board's grant becomes due after the results of the May or June examinations in the subsequent year have been issued (or after 31st December*), and when the conditions of the Scholarship have been fulfilled. Application for its payment must be made on Form 282.

Should it be desired to continue the Scholarship for a second or third Continuance. year, application must be made on Form 473. This form must be sent in as soon as the results of the scholar's examination held at the close of his first or second year, are made known, or in the case of a School of Science, when the Inspector has reported.

CONDITIONS OF LOCAL SCIENCE AND ART EXHIBITIONS.

a. The exhibition must be awarded in competition at the Board's Conditions annual evening examinations in Science or Art. The Managers may select the subjects of Science or branches of Art for the competition and they may fix any relative amount of marks they consider best to assign to them. b. College of Art-South Kensington, at which the fees for instruction will be remitted. If the Exhibitioner is to pursue his studies at the Institution applying for the Exhibition, the fees for instruction must be remitted.

c. The grant of the Board will be paid from year to year on condition that a like payment has been made by the Managers, and that the student has pursued his studies satisfactorily according to regulations fixed by the Board.

d. 101. of the local contribution will be paid to the Exhibitioner by the Board immediately it is notified to it (on Form 1066A) that he is commencing his studies. For the next three months of a term, a further monthly payment of 57. will be made out of the local contribution. 57. per month for three more months will be paid from the Board's grant when a certificate (Form 851) has been furnished by the Principal of the Institution at which the Exhibition is held, stating that the Exhibitioner is making satisfactory progress. The payment of the balance (107.) of the Board's grant will be made when the session terminates, and when a satisfactory report (Form 851) of the Exhibitioner's progress in his studies has been received from the Principal.

e. If the Exhibition is held at the Royal College of Science-or the Royal College of Art-South Kensington, 57. will be paid to the Exhibitioner monthly during the session by the Board.

f. Application for the Exhibition must be made (on Form 286) before the 5th April. The Board must be informed before the following 1st September (on Form 287) where the Exhibitioner will pursue his studies.

9. Application for the renewal of the Exhibition for a second or third year must be made on Form 472 as soon as the payment of the Board's grant towards the Exhibition for the preceding year has been made.

COURSES OF INSTRUCTION TO STUDENTS IN TRAINING AS

SCIENCE TEACHERS.

Subject to Revision for 1902.

March 1901.

A limited number of Teachers and Students in Science Classes under the Board, who intend to become Science Teachers, are admitted free for a term or a session to the sessional courses of instruction in the Royal College of Science, South Kensington. Whilst under examination or instruction they will receive a maintenance allowance at the rate of 21s. per week, and third class railway fare for one journey to and fro, each session, between the home of the Teacher or Student and the Royal College of Science.

Applicants are required to fill up and forward Form 400 before the 10th June, and Form 1019 before the 1st July. Copies of these Forms may be obtained from the Secretary, Board of Education, South Kensington, London, S.W.

In making selections, preference will be given to Applicants who are or have been already engaged in teaching Science. No Applicant under 18 or over 35 years of age, unless under exceptional circumstances, can be admitted, and no application can be considered unless the Applicant shows to the satisfaction of the College Authorities that he already possesses such an amount of preliminary knowledge of the subject or subjects in which he desires further training (and also of cognate or subsidiary subjects), as will enable him to profit by the instruction given at the College. Any provisionally selected Applicant may, before final approval, be called upon to pass an Entrance Examination at the College.

The courses given and the duration of each are as stated below:-

Attendance is required from 10 a.m. to 4 or 5 p.m. daily; in addition, Students will be required to give any further time necessary for writing up notes, &c. Students will be required to attend the Classes for Mathematics, Descriptive Geometry, and Freehand Drawing, in addition to the course of instruction for which they were selected, so far as may be considered
