receives Practical as well as Theoretical instruction in Section 1 of the Elementary Stage of Subject XXIII., he may be registered for attendances at such instruction for two years.

For the purposes of registration the first stage of Mathematics is treated as an Elementary Stage. A student may be registered for two years in that stage; and for two subsequent years in each of the Divisions I. and II. Thus the registration may be continued for two years in Stages 2, 3, and 4, or any one of them, and for two further years in Stages 5, 6, and 7, or any one of them.

d. No student may be registered in the Advanced Stage of a subject unless he has made 20 attendances in a previous year in the Elementary Stage of the same subject, or has obtained a success at an examination in that Stage, and no student may be registered in the advanced course of a group of subjects unless he has made 50 attendances in the previous year in the elementary course of the same group of subjects unless, in either case, he gives satisfactory evidence to the Board of his ability to profit by such advanced instruction.

e. No student may be registered for an attendance grant in the Elementary Stage of any subject in which he has already obtained a first class in the Elementary Stage, or any higher success.

f. No student who has obtained a first class in the Advanced Stage or a success in Honours of a subject may be registered for attendance grant in that subject.

g. No attendances may be registered for Subject V., Stage 1, on account of Male Teachers and Male Pupil Teachers who are teaching or have taught in Public Elementary Schools under the Board.

h. No student who has been in the Ele-i mentary course of a School of Science (see $$ LV. LXXII.) or in a day school under § LXXIII. for one year is eligible for registration for more than one further year in the Elementary Stage of the subjects which formed part of his course; and no student who has been in the Elementary course for two years is eligible for registration in the Elementary Stage of such subjects. in a School of Science for one or two years respectively.

A student on whom a grant has been paid in a School of Science or in a day school under § LXXIII. is ineligible for registration in Section 1 of the Elementary Stage of Subject XV., General Biology, or of Subject XXV., Hygiene, or of Subject XXIII., Physiography, in any case where Biology, Hygiene, or Chemistry and Physics or Physiography has formed part of the respective courses taken.

i. No student may be registered for attendances for special payments for practical work in the subject in which a claim is to be made unless the laboratory in which he is taught has been approved for that subject. The requirements for laboratories for Physics, and for Biological subjects, will be given with the Syllabuses (see Note II. on p. 63).

j. Training College students who passed in Division 1 of Mathematics under the late rules, can only be registered for attendance grants in Stages 5, 6, and 7, or for payments on results in Honours; those who have passed in Division 2 of Mathematics under the late rules are not eligible for any grants in that subject.

k. No student who has obtained a pass in Alternative Elementary Physics may be registered in the Elementary Stage of either Subject VIII. or Subject IX. Registration or success in either of the Elementary Stages of Subject X. will be counted as equivalent to registration or success in the other.

7. No student may be registered in Section 1 of Subject XXIII. who has obtained a success (which includes " Fair") or is during the same session registered for attendance grants, in Subject VIa., VI., VIII., IX., X., or XXIII.

m. No student may be registered in Section 1 of Subject XV. who has obtained a success (which includes "Fair") or is during the same session registered for attendance grants in Subject XIV., XV., XVI., or XVII.

n. No student may be registered for more than six years in the Elementary and Advanced Courses, nor for more than four years in either the Elementary or the Advanced Course of a specially recognized group. (See p. 7.)

EXAMINATIONS.

Examinations.

Personal examinations.

XIX. The Examinations are of two kinds

a. Personal examinations.

b. Examination of students' works.

PERSONAL EXAMINATIONS.

XX. Personal Examinations are held in the evenings in April and May, and in the daytime in June. But no candidate can be examined in the same subject at the Evening Examinations and at the Day Examinations in the same year. The students of a school must, as a rule, be all examined at the evening or all at the day examinations. It is expected that the students of day classes will sit at the day examinations, and the students of erening classes at the evening examinations. Examinations in the Elementary Stage of Science and Art subjects can only be held when special application forthem is made on Form 119, direct to the Board by Managersof Schools or, where one has been appointed, to the Special Local Secretary, on or before the 3rd March for the Evening Examinations or 30th April for the Day Examinations. The exact number of papers required for each subject must be stated, and the form of application must be accompanied in each case by the sum of 1s. 6d. for each paper asked for therein. For papers in the Elementary Stage of Practical Chemistry or Practical Metallurgy the fee will be 2s. 6d. per paper. The number of papers requisitioned cannot be subsequently varied, and no part of the remittance is returnable. Managers of Art Schools and Classes can be supplied with casts instead of diagrams for the examination in Drawing Ornament in Outline upon the condition that they make application on Form 119/ on or before 1st December for the number of casts required, and at the same time transmit to the Board 6d. for each cast applied for. The number of casts applied for cannot be subsequently varied and no part of the remittance is returnable. Where a Special Local Secretary is subsequently appointed the Managers must send to him the names of the candidates who are to draw from casts.

For examination time tables see pp. 81 and 86. These examinations are for duly qualified students in approved Science and Art classes, but on certain conditions, they may be attended by other candidates.

SCIENCE.

Students of a school under the Board who are candidates for examination in the Advanced Stage of a subject or recognised group of subjects of Science must comply with a condition of XVIIId.

ART.

Students who are receiving instruction in Group I. will not as a rule be regarded as qualified for personal examinations in Art.

The regulations for the conduct of examinations are given in Form 91 (see p. 88.)

In the Advanced Stage and in Part II. of Honours, and in the Elementary Stage (when an examination in it is held) there are two grades of success-first and second class.

In Section I. of the Elementary Stage of Subjects XV., XXIII., and XXV., and in Honours in which there is no division into parts there is only one grade of success, "pass."

Part I. of Honours is intermediate in difficulty between the Advanced Stage and Part II. of Honours, and success in Part I. is essential to qualify for examination in Part II. A success in Honours obtained before the division of Honours qualifies a candidate to sit for examination in Part II. of that subject. Parts I. and II. cannot both be taken in the same year (see Special Conditions in Subjects VIIIa., VIII., and VIIIc.). A competitor for an exhibition or scholarship may be examined without the prescribed qualification, and will be credited in the competition with the marks which he may obtain. He will not. however, in that case be credited with a success in Honours.

XXI.

In the Advanced Stage, in Honours, in subjects not divided into Stages, as well as in the Elementary Stage (when an examination in it is held) there are two grades of success, first and second class.

In the subjects of Drawing and Modelling from the Life and Architectural Design there is a further grade of success, viz., "excellent."

PRACTICAL EXAMINATIONS.

SCIENCE.

a. Examinations in Practical Chemistry (Subjects X. and XI.) and in Practical Metallurgy (Subject XIX.) are held only in schools provided with a laboratory which has been accepted as fulfilling the requirements given with the Syllabuses (see Note II. on p. 63).

ART.

a. Practical work in Modelling, Subject 18a (Elementary Stage), will be tested by the Inspector on the occasion of his visit to the Class.

b. Examinations in Drawing with Chalk on the Blackboard will be held by Inspectors during the months of January,
