506. Pouvoir émissif ou rayonnant. Pouvoirs absorbant et réfléchissant. Tous les corps, quelles que soient leur nature et leur température, jouissent de la propriété d'émettre ou de rayonner de la chaleur. Chaque rayon émané se meut en ligne droite, et son intensité en un point quelconque varie, pour une même source de chaleur, en raison inverse du carré de la distance de ce point à la source. La chaleur rayonnée traverse l'air sans l'échauffer. La quantité plus ou moins grande de chaleur émise ou rayonnée par un corps est ce qu'on appelle le pouvoir émissif ou rayonnant de ce corps.

Lorsqu'un corps poli est rencontré par un rayon de chaleur, il en

absorbe une partie et réfléchit l'autre. La portion plus ou moins grande de chaleur absorbée est ce qu'on appelle le pouvoir absorbant de ce corps, et la portion réfléchie est son pouvoir réfléchissant.

La température d'un corps restant constante, c'est que la quantité de chaleur qu'il émet est égale à la quantité de chaleur qu'il absorbe; d'où il résulte que le pouvoir émissif d'un corps est égal a son pouvoir absorbant. De plus, le pouvoir réfléchissant est le complément du pouvoir absorbant et aussi du pouvoir émissif.

Ainsi le pouvoir émissif d'un corps étant 90, par exemple, son pouvoir absorbant sera 90, et son pouvoir réfléchissant 10; ces nombres supposent que la quantité totale de chaleur qui vient frapper le corps est représentée par 100. Pour le noir de fumée, le pouvoir réfléchissant étant sensiblement nul, ses pouvoirs absorbants et émissifs ou rayonnants sont 100.

D'après MM. de La Provostaye et P. Desains, les pouvoirs réfléchissants des métaux ne paraissent pas changer avec l'incidence pour des angles inférieurs à 70 degrés; mais pour des angles supérieurs, ils diminuent sensiblement; ainsi, pour les angles de 75 ou 80 degrés, ils deviennent à peu près les 0,94 de ce qu'ils étaient sous des incidences plus petites. Il a été impossible d'observer avec sécurité dans des incidences plus rasantes, de sorte qu'on ne peut pas dire si la diminution continue jusqu'à 90 degrés.

Le pouvoir absorbant varie avec la nature de la source, avec l'état physique de la substance, avec l'inclinaison de la chaleur incidente. Le pouvoir absorbant d'une surface métallique est d'autant plus petit, et par suite son pouvoir réfléchissant est d'autant plus grand, que cette surface est mieux polie.

307. Transparence des corps pour la chaleur. L'air, l'eau et la glace se laissent traverser par la chaleur, et il en est de même d'un assez grand nombre d'autres corps gazeux, liquides ou solides, que pour cette raison on qualifie de diathermanes.
